Can We Look Back On The Future?

92 days ago on New Year's day 2012. Christmas decorations in the background.

Do you consider yourself set in your ways? Comfortable with same old same old? So, um, it doesn’t make sense writing five different blogs every day of the year. Crazy. “Why?”, you ask. Because work life balance has five components, not two.

On top of that, this month I’m writing three months in advance. Life is one grand experiment. Grab your safety goggles and lab coat. Let’s go.

Mid Life Rear View Mirror

Get A Grip & Be Prepared
Get A Grip & Be Prepared

Ever wonder how you’ll handle all of the challenges you face today?

And let’s suppose we actually do get a handle on our overwhelming challenges, then what?

What are the odds that we’ll be overwhelmed again soon?

Maybe I should go back to drinking everyday.  After a few drinks, we are medicated enough to stop worrying about today – it can wait until tomorrow.  That’s a nice relief – no more worry today.

But it mostly can’t wait.  If we do wait, more stuff is added to our “pile”.

Then we reach for our “midlife medication”.

Why we fail to look in the rear view mirror and see what is coming is beyond me.

Well, it used to be beyond me. Now, it’s staring me in the face. Every day.

It’s a ton of work, but at least I’m being honest with myself.

Talk about mid-life peace of mind.

Well, not talk. Do.

Be Afraid to Stop

“Be not afraid of going slowly;  be only afraid of standing still”. Chinese Proverb

I just wrote a blog post at jeff noel.com about this very subject.  About wondering if now is the right time, if the current approach is the right approach.

This type of potential self-doubt and potential fear, can sabatoge us from breaking through to something we can be great at.  And something we should be great at.  It’s just that we are late bloomers and are playing catch up.

This time delay – from creating a compelling vision – to it actually materializing, takes way longer than most people can comprehend.  This is why people give up and stop,

So, be not afraid of going slow.   Be afraid of stopping.

Mid Life Crisis?

Mid Life Crisis?  Mid Life Celebration?

Two choices.  Maybe there are more, but it only seems like two that are obvious.

So if you had a choice, which would you pick?

No brainer, eh?

Yep, no brainer.  Then why are so many unhappy?

Because life is hard.  Sometimes, it even feels impossible.

Take Your Time, But Hurry Up

“You no longer spend your life hurrying around the corner for something which is never there”.Rex Harrison

If we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it a thousand times.  There is no guarantee in life, except that we will die.

There seems to be a delicate balance between hurrying and not hurrying. We shouldn’t rush blindly through life, bypassing life’s simple pleasures.

But then again, we can’t spend too much time doing what pleases us, because in the end, there really is much work to be done.  Our: mind, body, spirit, money, community, job, sleep, errands, chores, etc.

If we take our cue from nature, animals are constantly trying to survive. There is always the threat of danger lurking somewhere.  In nature the saying goes, “Survival of the fittest”. I’m not talking physically, I’m talking comprehensively.

Ya with me, comprehensively.  This means your day will be really busy. Or not.
