Caught In The Act, By Lorie Sheffer

"Caught In The Act" (Photo: Lorie Sheffer)

This evening I got a good dose of food for thought along with my carry-out order of sushi.

I didn’t call ahead, so I had to spend a few minutes on a sofa by the front register. There was a little girl sitting at a table not too far from me. She was one of those adorable kids who you just want to run over and hug. A wild mass of blonde curls, wire rimmed glasses and a red tint to her nose that makes it seem she had spent this, one of the final days of summer, swimming in the afternoon sun. She seemed tired and restless. When her mother walked her back to the ladies room, she commented on the kimono that hung near the hallway as a decorative dividing curtain. Her mother told her that yes, it was pretty, but NOT to touch it. On the way back out she just couldn’t help herself, and as soon as her mother’s gaze drifted for a second, one of her little hands reached up and tugged at the sleeve. It immediately hit the floor. Her eyes got wide as her mother took her by the hand to the front of the restaurant to confess to the owner and offer an apology for what she had done. The owner, a Japanese lady who was probably near my own age, wasted no time in hunkering down to the little girls’ level and scooping her up in a warm hug. “I’m so sorry”, the lady offered. “No….. you don’t have to apologize to her. She grabbed it and it fell….” said the mother. “Oh, I understand. I saw the whole thing.” The owner now smiled to the little girl and went back to the register to answer the phone and take an order.

I watched this little girl, who was maybe all of 5 years old. She looked a bit confused, but she quietly went back to her seat, where she displayed her best manners for the remaining time I was there. She also kept glancing, and shyly smiling, at the lady who had shown her such mercy.

We Miss The Whole Point

There Famous Slogan Is Long Gone
Their Famous Slogan Is Long Gone

There’s a lesson, an insight, a revelation, a blinding flash of the obvious in this post for you, as we conclude this week’s theme from the former Rock and Roller.

As Baby Boomers, Gen X-ers, and even Gen-Y age, things change. Physical maifestations are easy to recognize – grey hair, wrinkles, weight gain, aches, even our music’s volume.

Change is good, unless you sell out on your claim to fame. Ron-Jon Surf Shop used to be just that, a single Cocoa Beach Florida Surf Shop – “Not One Of Many, One Of A Kind“.

Until their expansion. Cash is king. It used to be passion.

Remember? Totally famous? A “must-see” Florida Tourist attraction for decades. To leave Florida without a Ron-Jon T-shirt was unthinkable for most sunshine and beach lovers.

Back to the story, Flash says (because I asked him) the meaning of life is here and now.

Right now. This is it. It’s what we have in front of us and what we do with it.

The chase, the search for something better is the devil. In our efforts to go, or be, somewhere other than here, we miss the whole point.

What Is A Mid Life Crisis?

What is a mid life crisis?

One thing for sure, it isn’t a mid life celebration.

Just look at the difference in the two words:

  1. Mid Life Crisis
  2. Mid Life Celebration

I mean seriously, if you could only pick one, which would you pick?

Hot and Naked?

Hot & naked? Neither.

Hot and bothered maybe, but not hot and naked. There’s a temptation to use sexual innuendos to sell things.

It’s pervasive. So much so that this blog post title actually caused a reaction that was opposite of it’s purpose.

My purpose is simply to vent a little about how passively lives are lived. And it almost feels, to me, like people have given up the will to work hard.

Hard work.  It’s the only way, at any age.

While the title was read with the wrong purpose, it was written with the right intent.

If you have the will but are finding the way difficult, Mid Life Celebration’s intent is to reach as many people fitting this description as possible.

Mental wellness. Physical wellness. Spiritual wellness. Financial wellness.

All of it.

It’s our responsibility to do the best we can. And at mid life, most of us have the blessing of having people watching us.  Watching whether or not we live up to our responsibility.

Like all the Nike ads challenge – just do it.
