If Disney ran your mental attitude

Dead Poet's Society
The day Robin Williams died, an email from a 1990’s Disney colleague.

If Disney ran your mental attitude, we’d ask four simple questions:

  1. How well are your employees able to articulate your vision?
  2. How engaged are your employees in carrying out your vision?
  3. How clear are your employees on what they are being held accountable for?
  4. How committed are your employees, day in and day out?

There are many more questions but these are the baseline starting points.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

.think .differently Disney style

Best Disney Healthcare Speakers
7am yesterday…

Top Disney Conference Keynote Speakers
If you don’t walk away .thinking. differently the speaker has failed.

.think .differently Disney style…

If you’re looking for that type of perspective – thinking differently –  there’s this (retired and out on his own) Disney keynote speaker most people have never heard of…

His ideal client is an organization that has decided to burn the ships – the CEO has made a formal commitment to move forward differently, and better.

It’s a relationship that is analogous to adults who struggle (like i did as i approached my 40th birthday in 1999) with their health and hire a personal trainer to transform decades of decent, but less-than-optimal habits.

PS. What will make this story more interesting is to click through the four other short posts, all with pictures and brief narratives of what speaking was like from five different perspectives. Simply scroll down about 5-6 lines and click “here” to continue until you end up here again.

Now and then at Walt Disney World

Disney's Contemporary Resort
Where i stood to take this photo used to be a parking lot, and the Convention Center (right) used to be a parking lot too.

The Walt Disney World full-marathon is today. Something like 100k runners and fans. So many dreams for so many people. Most people who run their first marathon never keep running. But some do. Today we hope to add a few more lifetime wellness advocates to the list.

On a side note, January (mid-1980’s) used to be a “ghost town” at Walt Disney World. As a front line Cast Member at Disney’s Contemporary Resort back then, i can see what a wonderful job Marketing has done over the years to give our Guests many reasons to visit every week of every year.

Attitude helps us reach our goals and maintain our goals (for a lifetime). Without cultivating the indomitable will to think positively at all times, What we are cultivating? And are we moving towards quitting or away from it?

The cross i bear from a lifetime at Disney…

Epcot's Spaceship Earth
Two days ago we went in just to have lunch and then returned to our house.

The cross i bear from a lifetime at Disney…

Torn between zealot and acceptance.

Being driven to excel at thinking differently and doing things differently is a huge risk.

Why?

Because it causes discomfort for many.

Discomfort is generally not something people willingly line up for.

What is so weird about this though is this, people (including me) desperately want things to get better – at work and in their personal lives.

What is mind boggling, for me, is how resistant people actually are to what they so desperately want.

As my Disney speaking and advising business continues to grow, i find the same thing with many organizations.
