Why would you make a new employee wait five years?

Top photo summary: Based on the Amazon employee’s status update, Amazon doesn’t recognize an employee’s 1-year anniversary. But they do celebrate 5-years with a special employee ID.

Bottom photo summary: Disney recognizes 5-year employment anniversaries like Amazon, but also celebrates the first-year anniversary with a special Steamboat Willie Service Pin for the Cast Member’s name tag. Additionally, a new “years of service” pin is awarded at every five year anniversary. The Pinocchio statue also came with a 30-year service pin to wear on my Disney name tag.

So i have seven pins:

1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30

Disney over-focuses on the same things others under-focus on or ignore.

Why would an organization not focus on an early, celebratory win, on the first company anniversary?

Why?

And what’s to be gained culturally by celebrating one-year anniversaries?

Merry Christmas 2016?

Merry Christmas 2016?

i listened to a Seth Godin podcast late yesterday afternoon (September 24).

Back to that in a minute.

For many, Christmas celebrates the birth of a messiah.

Birth.

Messiah.

Birth of a savior.

To save our world.

Can you imagine the hope this provided back in the day?

Can you fathom for some that today feels like it happened yesterday, not 2016 years ago?

Something so old yet feeling so new.

Powerful.

Now, back to the hour-long podcast about writer’s block, fear, and art.

Today is day 17 of a year-long journey to write seven Disney business books in one year.

In the year marked from the release of the iPhone 7 release to the iPhone 8 release.

September 9, 2016 to (probably) September 9, 2017.

Why such a bold goal?

Because it’s possible.

A mountain of commitment.

And at this point in my life, i am certain it’s possible.

Why?

Because all my previous failures- and there are many – have taught me and prepared me for eventual success.

Can you imagine thinking of failure (and setbacks) in such a generous and positive manner?

i never could.

But late in life i began asking, “What if you did??

Now, back to the topic and conclusion.

Like so many people were 2000 years ago, and are to this day – they believed (and believe) a savior was born.

Conviction.

Now imagine you being certain of your own convictions.

Give a person a fish, feed her for a day. Teach her to fish and the rest is history.

i’m not here to hold your hand and tell you what to do. i’m here to show you your true north, how you get there, and convince you to go.

While ~~trying to convince you~~ reminding you this is your obligation as a great leader, it’s up to you to get there and if you decide not to go, well, i’m reminding you you have to live with not going.

Are you satisfied?

Walt Disney's Main Street window — iPhone 7 Plus.

Both photos were taken from the same location. Both phones are the latest Apple releases (Sept 9, 2016…15 days ago).

The difference is remarkable.

It’s a much more expensive proposition to own both versus just one.

The iPhone 7 is always with me because it easily fits in my front pocket and hand.

The iPhone 7 Plus fits nicely in my back pocket and i use it as a laptop – exponentially easier to carry than even the smallest, lightest MacBook.

Because i have had the 6s and 6s Plus, i’ve discovered the iPhone Plus is superior in allowing me to write anywhere, anytime.

The MacBook 12 which is bigger yet smaller than the MacBook Air, requires me to carry it in my hand or in a backpack.

Being hands-free and backpack free feels lighter, leaner.

i like that.

A lot.

iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and writing everyday at Walt Disney World…

Last night i sat in a rocking chair (top pic) to continue an epic writing challenge. While pausing to think, i took two photos of the same thing. One with the iPhone 7 fully zoomed, and one with the iPhone 7 Plus fully zoomed.

The 7 Plus camera zoom is remarkably better than the 7.
