We don’t teach potential

pink post it note with 3 handwritten notes
From a year and a half ago, a spontaneous idea got written down so i wouldn’t forget. Riffing on this idea today, Dec 14, 2025.

We don’t teach potential.

Why?

My theory, from living 6+ decades: most of us have a challenge living up to our own potential.

Stereotypically, most of us (myself included) never live up to our grandiose dreams, hopes, and goals.

Life is hard.

It’s fair to say that most of us unintentionally settle for decently average. We feel good if we can at least run with the pack.

Also stereotypically, average personal results make for average teachers.

Not until the desire for risk is greater than safety

Bruce Lee quote
Yesterday from LinkedIn. Risk and reward are inextricably linked.

There’s no heavier burden than a great potential. – Linus, from Charlie Brown

It makes sense that we should greatly influence our individual self before we can believe we are qualified to influence others, no?

Desire and purpose are the twin siblings of positive change.

We can only accomplish something great when our desire for taking the risk is greater than our desire for playing it safe.

Always looking for signs of happiness in midlife?

We are constantly looking for signs of happiness

Always looking for signs of happiness in midlife?

Probably.

Why?

Because most of us are struggling to keep up with the Jones.

Not the ‘Jones’ house, yard, or car, but with the ‘Jones’ apparent happiness.

Social media can become a big smoke screen for what lies underneath.

A deep and dull feeling of average.

Average is only bad if we assign it that value.

But what if average was actually bliss?

And what if it’s not?

What if we are capable of so much more but are afraid to go for it?

Which comes first, the proliferation or the determination?

Seth Godin shared his 5,000th blog post yesterday.

Highly unlikely prolific bloggers start out thinking proliferation.

Most bloggers’ focus is short term.

Apparently not Seth – 3,650 days (10 years) to reach his incredible milestone.

Congratulations Seth. Inspiring.

Remarkable.
