Dear readers, it certainly is not a secret, but…

It certainly is not a secret, but… the Internet lets anyone discover anything about anybody. There are no more secrets. Zero.

Huh?

Yesterday (September 27, 2013) was a work anniversary – 29 consecutive years with the same organization. And if you add in eight more months as a 1982 seasonal worker, it’s almost 30 years total.

Why this remains a literal secret at Mid Life Celebration’s five daily, differently-themed blogs is intriguing.

A whole new world

Indiana corn fields near harvest time
This is not Disney’s Magic Kingdom, yet it is still Magical.

Living and working at the Walt Disney World Resort was a dream that became a reality 30 years ago. But the phone rang 15 years ago and an opportunity was offered, to become a professional speaker, something never, ever pursued, nor desired.

Have spoken to one million people since then. And every morning, like right now, it is the same challenge. How do you convince others who live in an obviously different world, that it is all the same?

Mid Life Escape?

Maybe escape is the wrong word. And if it’s not the wrong word, it certainly seems like a strong or desperate word.

I’m in no position to tell anyone what to do.  Duh, right?

Mid Life Celebration is the escape route I took.  Rather than feel defeated and hopeless, it seemed like a good idea to rise to the occasion and be the change I wished to see in the world.

Perhaps my story will help you with yours. Perhaps not.

Can you start to see how this works?

For me, honesty is the first step.

And the fruit of honesty, eventually, is joy.

Hate To Work?

“If you choose a job that you like you will never have to work another day in your life.” Confucius

Looks good on paper.  Yet, I know so many mid life professionals who are stuck in a career or job that no longer (or never did) feeds their passion.

In many ways, for a variety of reasons, I’ve been there myself.  It is not pleasant. But we have mortgages, bills to pay, mouths to feed, etc.  So we do it.  Day in, day out.

This is one of the big causes of a mid life crisis, along with others like illness, disease, divorce, empty nest syndrome, death, bankruptcy, infidelity.

This week will likely focus on career joy. And the best way to get it is to have a job where you get to do more than you have to do. Ya with me?

Einstein Average Man

“If I would be a young man again and had to decide how to make a living, I would not try to become a scientist or scholar or teacher.  I would rather choose to be a plumber or a peddler in the hope to find that modest degree of independence still available under present circumstances”. Albert Einstein

Meanwhile in my zip code, there’s a sea of upscale vehicles, yet the 1990 Toyota suites me perfectly.

There’s even a dinner-plate sized dent on the driver’s front fender.  Was going to have it repaired until I realized how much that road-rage induced dent signified how lucky I am to still be alive.

In America, we are constantly tempted to keep up with the Joneses.  Why?   Because we are afraid of who we really are.

Would you rather be loved for who you’re not or hated for who you are?
