The writing epiphany from The Crown of the Continent

Lake McDonald reading room
Never knew there was a reading room in Glacier National Park (Lake McDonald Lodge).

Want to be a writer?

Or is there some other dream?

The secret to getting there?

Ship.

Daily.

In spite of the fear it’s not good enough.

One more thing, don’t worry about becoming famous, worry about being authentic (or fascinating) enough that your Family and friends will find value.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

The second most contagious thing in the world

Disney leadership keynote speaker
Make no small plans, for they have no power to stir your soul.

The most contagious thing in the world is enthusiasm.

Know what the second most contagious thing in the world is?

The lack of enthusiasm.

Try to explain passion to someone who’s never had it

Try to explain passion for having a positive and optimistic attitude to someone who’s never had it.

Should we love uncertainty?

road work sign
Yesterday in our front yard. Can road work employees consider their work art? Should they?

Art rarely can be scaled for a production line.

Yet Apple does it with the iPhone.

However, art, for mere mortals like you and me, cannot be scaled.

But is can be replicated in original ways every single day.

It’s called passion.

A calling.

A drive to do the ordinary in extra-ordinary ways.

And each day because we begin anew, we can never be sure of our finished product.

Sometimes we fall short, or even fail.

And this is beautiful.

It reminds us of how uncertain art can be.

Art always carries risk.

And the minute we try to remove uncertainty from our art, something dies.

Removing uncertainty destroys the thing we originally fell in love with.

Whatever we do today, it won’t be the result that makes it magic, it will be the uncertainty.

It’s dangerous to confuse the two

morning love note
First thing awaiting me downstairs yesterday morning. Rec’d mug last night at conference welcome dinner.

Don’t confuse your gift with your passion.

Disney is my passion.

Teaching is my gift.

Although i hated to leave Disney after 30 incredible years, it was the right thing to do.

Ps. 100 days later, today, May 12, i’ve had to re-read this post several times and i’m still struggling to understand my conviction when i wrote it.
