Still can’t get over this dramatic change in behavior

Emptied every night for more than a year and counting.

Still can’t get over this dramatic change in behavior. Thirteen months ago in preparation for a Summer Writer’s retreat on Sanibel Island, i emptied my email inbox, sent folder, and trash folder.

Never intended for it to last.

Surprise!

That was July 1, 2015.

Every night since then (like 419 consecutive nights) i’ve zero’d out those three email folders.

My mornings have never been the same.

Without realizing it, i was starting everyday behind. Doing yesterday’s (or the day or days before) work before i could launch what needs to get done today.

2016 Disney Talent Management Article

Disney Fairy Tale Weddings
The “Magic” is our ability to keep the reality of the hard work invisible.

It’s not the Magic that makes it work, it’s the work that makes it Magic.

A recent Disney Talent Management article from July (no longer available on this site) illustrates many things which aren’t specifically called out, including:

  • Everything takes longer than hoped
  • Collaboration is key
  • Creativity is key
  • Vision is key
  • Transformation is key

Lots of keys to the Kingdom.

Focus and discipline.

Let me try to hammer home the point.

It’s as absurd as when non-athletic people say this when talking about athletic people, “They don’t need to worry about dieting.”

Having run consistently for the past 17 years, since turning 40, i can tell you that there isn’t a single day that i don’t:

  • Weigh myself
  • Consciously evaluate every food choice i make on a daily basis
  • Feel frustrated at how easily i gain weight
  • Secretly wish i didn’t have to work so hard just to maintain my weight

You had no idea right?

Today is one of multiple and progressive deadlines

Disney Business Advisor jeff noel
Idea captured while on a long bicycle ride yesterday.

This is due today, May 21, 2016. Note below is captured here for posterity. It’s from an amazing project manager, Disney marketing expert, Executive Chef, former Disney colleague, and personal friend. (My answers are further into today’s posts)

•  •  •  •  •

Define the Advisor Program in 2 sentences or less that tell me exactly what the program is, and the top 3 beneficial outcomes I would receive as a customer. (do not include things like “working with an advisor with 30-years experience” as a benefit)

Define who you are in one phrase, like if you were introducing yourself to someone new, either in first person or third person: I’m Jeff Noel, a _______________ (job title), who works with _____________ (type of client) to help them achieve __________________(benefit)

We’ll turn the above info into something like this: Jeff Noel, a 30-year Disney Leadership veteran, is a published author and highly-sought business transformational advisor, helping Fortune-500 companies achieve success through Disney’s tried and true business approach methods.

Jeff took his 30 years as a leader at Disney, and created a better Mouse Trap…

Name the top 5 direct beneficial outcomes (transformations) a company can expect when working with you. Do not list anything that has to do with you or your experience/expertise – list only beneficial outcomes for the company working with you.

Facebook is really freakin’ me out

Cocoa Beach Pier old man surfer
Couple days ago at Cocoa Beach. We can easily drown in the sea of lifetime choices we are confronted with.

Facebook has really freaked me out this past year.

It’s unmanageable with the other commitments clamoring for attention in our lives; can’t keep up with all the activity. Does anyone else feel guilt, or struggle with this?

On Facebook, society at large presents their best foot forward, or their deepest grief. Do we try to keep up, daily, with hundreds of magic and tragic updates?

How often do active users have to look at their phones each day? And if it isn’t number of looks, then how much time is required, each day/week? And if we are just skimming, why? What’s the motive? To compare? To be rubberneckers on the highway of life?

What is this auto pilot reaction to “Like” so many things? i feel like i want to and that i should – it’s the friendly thing to do – but then i start wondering, “Do we post updates to see how many likes we can get, like some weird video game in pursuit of our high score?”

So yeah, pretty freaked out in 2015.
