i’m fascinated by the mental results of setting a 10-year deadline

Disney Leadership advice
A note to myself from June 2013, as i listened to George Kalogridis’s leadership Keynote Speech. Trusting your gut was one of seven points he made that have served him well.

i’m fascinated by the mental results of setting a 10-year deadline.

Not because George Kalogridis, Walt Disney World President said it, but because i believe in it.

Trust your gut.

My gut told me in December 2008, six months before my 50th birthday, to make a 10-year plan to include everything that i wanted to do in life before i die.

The crazy part was saying to myself, “Since no one knows when they will die, what would happen if you set an artificial, yet realistic, deadline in which to do everything you want before time is up?”

Here’s the thing, i have never in my life heard of such an endeavor.

So it’s likely, no one i know has heard of anyone either.

So if i make this claim that i’m doing it, how crazy (ridiculous) would that be?

i did it anyway.

Trust your gut.

This takes some serious thinking.

As of today, i have 21 months to finish up.

That’s the main reason i’m flying to Glacier National Park tomorrow for four days – to see GNP dusted in snow. It may be the last chance i get.

Will i write 5-a-day until i die?

Disney University
Life in my hometown the other day. Went for a bike ride after writing for the first two hours of the day.
There’s a chance i will continue to write 5 daily, differently-themed blog posts until the day i die.

It helps me see things i never saw before.

It helps me see things i always see, but now with a remarkable clarity.

Those two things have become a source of oxygen – something i can’t live without.
i love writing.

i’d really like to see GNP dusted with snow before i die

Going to the Sun Road
Yesterday on Facebook.

How do we overcome the noise (real and imaginary) from others when our way of thinking and doing goes against conventional and traditional thinking and doing?

Since returning from Glacier with Howard two weeks ago, i’ve been crafting a return trip before October 1, when Logan Pass Visitor Center closes for 2017.

Two other factors creating a sense of urgency include Going to the Sun Road closing Eastbound from Apgar on October 9 for construction. Plus a heavier than normal travel schedule through October leaves few options.

Using Capitalone points, i’ll travel September 27-30.

Booked hotel and rental car days after returning, knowing they can be canceled without a fee.

It feels good to commit.

i had waffled almost constantly because airfare kept going up.

It also felt a little selfish.

The tipping point came when i honored the commitment to live like i have until my 60th birthday.

i’d really like to see GNP dusted with snow before i die.

News of Walt’s death in 1966 spread quickly

News of Walt’s death in 1966 spread quickly.

And today (the 50th anniversary of Walt’s untimely death)  reminded me of something many people don’t realize…

Frequently while facilitating “leadership vision” at Disney Institute, class participants would comment how sad it was that Walt never got to see Walt Disney World.

Early on, i created a simple response to illustrate the power of leadership vision:

Walt saw Walt Disney World clearer than anyone, that’s the only reason it’s here today.

He painted a picture of it that was too compelling to walk away from after his death.

We bought nearly 43 square miles (27,443 acres) for less than $200 an acre.

We bought it cheap, we could sell it cheap.

To transform 43 square miles of alligator, snake, and mosquito-infested swampland into the “Vacation Kingdom of the World” was borderline hallucinogenic.

At 73, Roy O. Disney (Walt’s older brother) came out of retirement and for five years, led the initial development – Magic Kingdom, two Resort Hotels, and a Campground.

Two months after dedicating Magic Kingdom to the World in 1971, Roy passed away.

The Paradox Of Preparing To Die

Seth Godin's Titan
This was in the packaging of a giant 17-pound book we received a couple days ago. What will it sound like when (if) you change your mind about preparing to die?

The Paradox Of Preparing To Die:

Like it or not, agree with it or not, we (you and i) are dying.

From the moment we’re born.

No?

So, should we be preparing to die?

i say, “Yes.”

Why?

Because the process of preparing enlightens us on how to live more fully in the routine, daily moments that fill our lives.

i could never relate to that idea because i had never done it.

i was floating back and forth…

Most of us are neither preparing to die nor preparing to live.

Floating back and forth between doing nothing.

Going through the motions.

Sleepwalking through life.

Neither living purposefully, nor dying purposefully.

But imagine preparing to die.

Can you?

Recall how you anticipated (and prepared for) one of your favorite vacations.

Same difference.
