Welcome to the Southern Hemisphere Jack

Jack the Bear
Jack is coming out of retirement.

Welcome to the Southern Hemisphere, Jack.

Jack is coming out of International travel retirement.

And after yesterday’s meeting in the W Hotel, is would seem that it will happen sooner rather than later.

Brand You: Tell your personal story

Great reminder about staying focused on the basics.

(Above) Brand You: Tell your personal story.

Great reminder.

The year was 2008 or 2009.

Our new Disney Institute Vice President, Jeff James, often walked past the cube i shared with Jack Santiago.

By the way, because office space was so limited, nearly everyone at Disney Institute shared a cube.

On one brief encounter, i invited Jeff into my cube and used Jack’s bookshelf (all my business books were at my home office) as the center of the vision i had for Disney Institute.

i said to Jeff, “Jeff, in the children’s video genre, what is the average household percentage of Disney videos in every children’s category?”

Our educated guess – from personal experience – is the percentage is overwhelmingly high for Disney videos.

Then i asked, pointing at Jack’s bookshelves, “What if every business leader across the globe had an overwhelmingly high percentage of Disney Institute business books on their office bookshelves?”

Currently, Be Our Guest is the only published “Disney Institute” business book.

My Summer 2018 focus is to get the next seven Disney and Disney Institute business books written, then published.

The business world is waiting, even if they are unaware these books are coming.

And this morning, i’m just days away from the first of six Summer writing retreats. All seven books are currently in the two-thirds done stage.

So the Disney legend asked me

High School basketball game
Last night, courtside seat, sat next to a Disney legend.

In reality, the genesis of this photo was me needing a note/reminder for this morning.

So the Disney legend asked me last night as we sat together, courtside, “How did you get started?”

Luck.

i never intended to speak about Disney after retiring.

My vision was – and still is – to challenge 80 million Baby Boomers to do something great before they die.

That’s why i published Mid Life Celebration: rethink • reprioritize • recommit

Even before retiring, the phone was ringing, “Can you come speak to our group about Disney.”

So i shelved MLC (for now).

After two years, i’m better suited for the ups and downs

International speaking cities
Yesterday’s client call to South America. Two airports for two possible engagements in one trip. The names are two airports i’d potentially be flying to.

After two years, i’m better suited for the ups and downs.

The peaks and valleys of starting a business can drive you crazy.

Wondering where the next paycheck is coming from.

And conversely, wondering what you did in your life to deserve so much reward.

It runs as extreme as love and hate, day and night, hot and cold.

Yesterday’s call to Columbia has me hopeful, but not placing any stock in the outcome.

Organized just enough to do a few remarkable things

Two Dog Flats
The Restaurant, not the place.

Two Dog Flats
The place, not the restaurant.

Email to college buddy who has agreed to travel to Glacier with me:

Dave, ball-park ideas to maximize our time without rushing…Highline Trail and Grinnell Glacier Hike are GNP’s most popular hikes (partially because while challenging they are not too strenuous for most people), but i’m intrigued by Ptarmigan Trail – it looks amazing, and strenuous. Important to note that any trail at any time can be closed due to bear activity.

Fri: Arrive 2pm-ish, p/u rental car at airport, grocery store (cooler, food, etc), enter GNP, stop at Lake McDonald shoreline to gawk at the splendor, drive 50 miles East on Going-To-The-Sun Road, maybe a brief stop here or there to whet your appetite, check in at Rising Sun (probably close to 5pm), 100 meter walk to dinner at Two Dog Flats (at Rising Sun), drive back up to Logan Pass, hike Hidden Lake Trail (3 miles, 500 ft elevation…easy hike), hang out at Logan Pass for wildlife viewing, return to Rising Sun, drive to Two Dog Flats (not the restaurant) for more wildlife spotting, drive two miles back to room, dessert(?) from Camp Store.

Sat: Day-break visit (1-mile drive) to St Mary Lake overlook for sunrise, breakfast Two Dog Flats, an hour or so of free time to wait for 10am Red Bus Tour (6-hr Crown of The Continent tour with lunch on own at Lake McDonald Lodge), tour concludes at Rising Sun approx 4:15pm, relax, dinner at St Mary (6 miles east) or Two Dog Flats, back up to Logan Pass for wildlife viewing and maybe a partial hike (1/2 mile out and back – spectacular view) on Highline Trail, return to Rising Sun.

Sun: Grinnell Glacier Hike or Highline Trail Hike. Both hikes are approx 11 miles long. Highline Trail is one way with a free shuttle to return to car at Logan Pass. Grinnell Glacier trailhead is at Many Glacier Lodge (approx 45-min drive from Rising Sun). We’d have early breakfast 7am-ish and attempt to be parked and walking between 8-830am. Figure 8 hrs+- for the hike. Dinner and evening are open.

Mon: Hike whichever hike above we didn’t do on Sunday. Also, distinct possibility to substitute Ptarmigan Trail (looks amazing) as this day’s hike. The Park employees can advise us which they would choose. Dinner and evening open.

Tues: Return you to Kalispel airport. 😭

PS. open to any ideas or wishes you have.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.
