Weak overwhelmingly prevails

If that bookshelf could talk.

Truth or dare?

Truth, please.

Ask any seasoned Disney business consultant and speaker, “What’s the most universal thing you witness across all industries?”

An organization’s spirit to change is strong, yet the organization’s will to change is weak.

Told you that to tell you this: same thing happens to individuals, people like you and me. We desperately would love to develop better habits, but we struggle with the time, money, and effort required.

Find a million ways to stay motivated.

You will never

Make being out of your comfort zone your comfort zone.

You will never reach your potential, and discover your purpose, by staying in your comfort zone.

Commitment device

How do you keep your motivational fire going? How do you keep calm in the heat of a tempting moment? Photo: Yesterday, prepping for last night’s temperature dip into the low 60’s.

A commitment device allows your cool-headed decisions to not get destroyed by the temptation of your hot-headed desire for pleasure or pain avoidance.

Couple commitment devices i use:

  1. Being an example not a warning
  2. Consistently using compelling deadlines
  3. The long way is the shortcut
  4. Loving risk more than comfort

Continued from yesterday’s riff

Training. Teaching. Business. Uncharted territory is common. Risk taking is common. Growth is common.

Here’s an example of what i was describing yesterday about approval addiction.

Our son joins the cross country team in 10th grade and it was never about how well he ran.

It was about being part of a supportive team, developing relationships, setting goals, overcoming obstacles, persistence, recognizing progress, celebrating small victories unrelated to run times, and enjoying being a part of a loving community.

We gave consistent and positive feedback on traits like perseverance, courage, creativity, honesty, and perspective.

These are, after all, assets that last a lifetime, long after anyone remembers how fast you ran a 5k.

Nothing changes

Before it fades (see it in photo?) caught my attention yesterday in Philadelphia.
There was a lot to look at and we surely missed countless, meaningful details.

Nothing changes when nothing changes.

Knowing and not doing is the same as not knowing.

Adults do not have the luxury of living not knowing.

Playing around with a new “next” and a one to three year deadline.
