Happy 59th birthday dude

Happy 59th birthday dude.

Nine years ago you began a 10-year journey to “do everything in life you wanted to do” before your 60th birthday.

Why?

A realization that no male on your Dad’s side lived past 60.

Today you turn 59.

This is technically your final Summer.

Are you afraid?

No.

Will you probably live past 60?

Probably.

But nine years ago, and like today and tomorrow, you know no guarantee is ever granted anyone.

The greatest benefit in pursuing your weird and unconventional goal?

Eliminating shoulda, woulda, and coulda from your vocabulary.

And learning how to respect, live, and enjoy peace and contentment.

You’re in charge of creatively solving your life’s biggest challenges

jeff noel's bead jar Disney
Removed bead #18 24 hours ago. On my desk sits this jar, and this jar and the 936  beads to fill it cost $10 nearly 18 years ago. Every Saturday, since 2000, i have removed one bead.

Dear Son,

You’re in charge of creatively solving your life’s biggest challenges.

If you take this seriously – for a lifetime – you risk alienating yourself from people close to you.

Why?

How?

Here’s why and how: Being driven to achieve your impossible dream reminds others they’ve given up on theirs.

Your forward motion is too painful for them to watch.

PS. You will have this same battle with yourself. Your old self will do everything possible to remind you that your odds of success are tiny.

Wow, what am i doing here?

Wow, what am i doing here?

In 30 days, year nine concludes and year 10 begins.

Who takes a dreaded cultural phenomenon – Midlife Crisis – and turns it into joy, discovery, opportunity, and purpose?

Mid Life Celebration was a crazy idea i had while teaching the four-day Disney’s Approach to People Management somewhere near the turn of the century.

Bob Spina and i were co-facilitating how the language (specific, carefully chosen words) organizations use determines behavioral outcomes.

Note, the lack of intentionally choosing specific words also determines behavioral outcomes – and the outcomes are not crafted, they are by default, random and unintentional, possibly even detrimental.

Also in this discussion were symbols, values, heritage and traditions, as well as traits and behaviors.

And in the moment, as i was searching for a new way to say the same thing, i told the audience, “Do you have a problem or an opportunity, a problem or a challenge, a midlife crisis or a midlife celebration.”

From a tiny acorn, a mighty Oak does grow.

Happy New Day

Ordering HomePods
Upper right corner. Awoke at 2:55am to buy at 3:01am (12:01am Cupertino time). Tried unsuccessfully for 20 minutes.

Happy New Day.

Can you hear yourself saying this?

i shoulda.

i coulda.

i woulda.

i’m a simple person.

(ps. you’re still talking to yourself…)

i work hard.

i sacrifice.

My goals are pretty lofty.

A fair amount of my family, friends, and colleagues don’t get why i work so hard.

The goal?

To win.

Win what?

Victory over my old self.

Metamorphisis.

To journey through life, preparing for the next leg.

To do what you need to do today so your tomorrows are better.

We thrive or we survive.

Life is fair in that it is unfair to everyone.

Celebrate.

Go.

The doctor says my time on Earth is limited

inspiring messages
The messenger today is a cardboard tissue box.

The doctor says my time on Earth is limited.

Truth be told, so is yours.

We don’t need a doctor to tell us.

We should be telling ourselves this.

But.

But it’s scary news.

Sure.

But.

But it’s not untrue.

Use this reality to inspire you to live like you mean it.

That’s what i’ve been doing for the past 8.5 years.

Go.
