Truth be told

Baby bird on driveway in Florida
First sighting two days ago

Close up of bay bird
Final sighting yesterday.

Florida landscape
Hawk flew into this tree. Chick was near the chairs.

Truth be told, life is brutal.

Life is also brilliantly joyful.

Running out for a quick errand yesterday, the baby bird was back. We saw him the night before and felt sad it was prematurely out of the nest.

Right or wrong i opted to let nature follow its due course, largely because i didn’t see a nest.

Snapped the photos above and turned to walk to the car. Three seconds later, screeching broke out. A hawk picked the baby up from the driveway and flew up into the closest tree and the hysteria ensued.

It lasted a few seconds and then the hawk flew off into the distance.

Embellishment and editorial license

Sally Hogshead Fascinate
Sally Hogshead, creator of “How to Fascinate”

What follows is my opinion from 15+ years of being on the inside listening and observing professional speakers and writers of all sorts.

Quite remarkable isn’t it?

All the advice on the web and in print. Anyone can publish anything.

Most of us aren’t writers. So we have no clue at a conscious level about embellishment and editorial license.

Embellishing is easy. And hard to disprove. So we believe everything we read.

But do these writers and speakers practice what they preach?

Rarely.

But there are a few.

Very rare.

PS. Posts like this come along occasionally because of their cathartic value.

The genius and risk of human shortcuts

Disney Speaker with Mary Poppins
Much of life is based on fairy tale imprinting.

Heuristics, defined here, may be getting in our way.

Or, they may be what leads to our breakthrough.

Alas, life is tough.

Much of our life is based on fairy tale imprinting.

Our brain compensates by accepting prevailing thoughts or concepts that may no longer be true – and may have never been true.

Heuristics are human shortcuts that allow busy, distracted humans to quickly process things and reach conclusions.

Or maybe we just make it tough because we aren’t willing to buck the heuristics.

Buck the heuristics. Double entendre intended.

Be brutally honest with this person at all costs?

Quote about telling the truth
The first person we want to be brutally honest with is ourself

Be brutally honest with this person at all costs?

First and foremost, ourselves.

Yes, at all costs.

Take no prisoners.

Be careful with everyone else though.

It can have the reverse effect.

Pain. Intimidation. Self-righteousness. Narcissist. Zealot.

Let the fear of being condemned and labeled be the cross you bear.

Eventually, you’ll come to realize what they think is pointless.

What if they are full of it and what if they are not?

Quote about acceptance
This is a two-way street so lead with compassion and forgiveness (photo: @overlyxclusive)

The interesting thing about getting honest feedback is that we should always consider the source.

What if they are full of it? What if they are not?

This makes it tough because often the source itself is reliable, but the source’s exposure and comprehension may be influenced only by second-hand or pre-filtered information.

As a parent or a boss, we often get little exposure to what is actually happening in the day to day. So we rely on others to give us feedback.

The inherent challenge with this perception of reality is our optimism, values, filter, problems, goals, health, and so on, is not based on eye-witness observations.
