Years ago i added this sentence to my professional experience section on LinkedIn:

There may only be one or two people today for which this is the right message at the right time…

An unsolicited book compliment from my wife’s 5th grade (1968) teacher.

Why is this important to share?

Because it’s risky.

Risky to think an opportunity would have been easy to share, but fear or apathy denied it.

Here’s an excerpt from yesterday’s email to my wife:

“The bonus I received from my visit (to see my wife’s parents) was a copy of Jeff’s book your mother gave me. I thoroughly enjoyed the book—I also like the format.

While reading the book I realized I followed many of the questions Jeff outlined in the five areas of life—mind-body-spirit-money-HQ . Maybe that is why I believe I did an ok job as an educator and in my personal life.

The section of “the fear of dying” was most enlightening and beneficial. In addition I have taken Jeff’s challenge to do “something great within 72 hours”. After finishing the book I started 3 challenges and I am much happier …More are planned.

Again, thanks for the impact YOU have made on my life..Because of you I kept in touch with you and your parents over the years….and now through Jeff you continue to have a positive affect on my life.. Not many teachers can say that about a 5th grade student they had in class over 50 years ago.

Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year.”

i’m not selling books, i’m offering hope that you can love yourself the way you deserve.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Dear Son, karma and luck are distant cousins

Sunrise near Walt Disney World
Yesterday, a Sunday morning (November 8, 2015) while working for two hours to keep up.

Dear Son, karma and luck are not the same thing. They may seem similar but there’s a distinct difference.

Karma, good or bad, attracts like-minded karma.

Luck, good or bad, does not attract like-minded luck.

We choose karma. We do not choose luck.

The notion that the harder you work the luckier you get seems romantically true. But luck and hard work have nothing to do with each other.

Hard work allows you to fail faster and more often. Failing strengthens your resolve and it also strengthens your creativity – both are essential in overcoming the things everyone must overcome.

Hard work, over time, builds something that can easily get mislabeled as “luck”.

If you don’t expect it, you settle

UPS package tracking email screenshot
“The check is in the mail.” Receiving payment in advance is wonderful. And expected.

If you don’t expect it, you settle.

You may still have to settle, but without trying, you will always settle.

With trying, you may surprise yourself at how readily the Universe meets you where you are.

Be careful where you hang out.

It’s called (midlife) karma.

Karma attracts fairness and unfairness, but mostly karma is fair.

It’s the less frequent unfairness that tempts us to believe karma is just a lucky break.

Dear Son, what goes around comes around

Apple Store at Mall of Millenia, Orlando
Apple Store Mall at Millenia, Orlando

We seen it on TV. A reputable person, say an elementary school teacher, being a jerk to someone undeserving. In public. It taints everything.

Dear Son, as we both witnessed the dialogue of the bitter man (a casual friend actually) hating Apple Genius employees (and his laptop), we came to a blinding flash of the obvious:

You get out of life what you put in.

While at the Genius bar at exactly the same time, unaware of our friend’s hatred, I told the Genius how much I trusted Apple to take care of me no matter what.

Then in less than a minute, we got an invaluable lesson.

You get out of life what you put in.
