Merry Christmas, thank you Christmas for being an annual part of my life

Fosbury flop. Screenshot from Twitter yesterday (Oct 24). The University of Oregon revealed this statue yesterday.

Why the Fosbury video?

Because Twitter planted a seed yesterday.

And the seed grew into a thought about being a pioneer.

Pioneers change things.

Maybe the way i think about death (and the 10-year plan) is pioneering.

Time will tell.

And no, i didn’t do it to pioneer anything.

Dick Fosbury didn’t either.

Dick was simply looking for a way to not be the worst high jumper on his High School team.

And i simply don’t want to die with regret. i plan to die with peace and contentment. Peace with who i am. Content with what i have.

Merry Christmas, thank you Christmas for being an annual part of my life.

According to my 10-year plan, this is my final Christmas.

i’m at peace with having such a non-conforming approach to life.

The critics, and there are always critics, used to be people i worried about what they would think of me.

Maybe 3-5 years ago i started asking, “Why?”

Well, for starters, some of them are family and friends.

People i’ve known a lifetime.

To this unnecessary worry, i’ve surrendered.

Free at last.

Thank God almighty, i’m free at last. (ht MLK)

Note: ht = hat tip.

If there were only six months left to live

solar charger
Yesterday, experimenting with a potential improvement for Glacier National Park. This solar charger would fill the void for the lack of electricity at Granite Park Chalet.

If there were only six months left to live would you continue to make small daily improvements?

Asking you this under the assumption you already have the daily habit of small, daily improvement deeply ingrained. Safe to assume?

It’s so easy to dismiss the daily value of making slightly better choices.

  1. Sticking with the basics is not impressive.
  2. Being in love with boredom is not compelling.
  3. Getting a fraction better isn’t going to be newsworthy.

So let’s say you have decades to live, would you focus on daily incremental improvement? Remember items 1-3?

Happy 59th birthday dude

Ted Talk on Death
Intelligent conversation about death and design.

Happy 59th birthday dude.

Nine years ago you began a 10-year journey to “do everything in life you wanted to do” before your 60th birthday.

Why?

A realization that no male on your Dad’s side lived past 60.

Today you turn 59.

This is technically your final Summer.

Are you afraid?

No.

Will you probably live past 60?

Probably.

But nine years ago, and like today and tomorrow, you know no guarantee is ever granted anyone.

The greatest benefit in pursuing your weird and unconventional goal?

Eliminating shoulda, woulda, and coulda from your vocabulary.

And learning how to respect, live, and enjoy peace and contentment.
