50 is not a bad time to change everything

The photo’s text is crucial for today’s context…

Disney creativity and innovation speaker
Felt like having some fun and challenging myself in a creative, never-done-this-before way.

While cycling home from the gym yesterday, had an hour (3x longer than promised) phone conversation with somebody i’ve never met.

He’s in his mid-40s and wants to take control of his work life and be his own boss and do something amazing and make a contribution to society using his skill set and experience.

Hours later, in the early afternoon, as i laid down to take a nap it hit me… i was exactly where he was when i decided to change everything and start a small business.

That was seven years ago.

i was 50.

Insight: Using age as an excuse or barrier to catching a dream is an unproductive idea.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

From 5th grade to 50 years later

There may only be one or two people today for which this is the right message at the right time…

An unsolicited book compliment from my wife’s 5th grade (1968) teacher.

Why is this important to share?

Because it’s risky.

Risky to think an opportunity would have been easy to share, but fear or apathy denied it.

Here’s an excerpt from yesterday’s email to my wife:

“The bonus I received from my visit (to see my wife’s parents) was a copy of Jeff’s book your mother gave me. I thoroughly enjoyed the book—I also like the format.

While reading the book I realized I followed many of the questions Jeff outlined in the five areas of life—mind-body-spirit-money-HQ . Maybe that is why I believe I did an ok job as an educator and in my personal life.

The section of “the fear of dying” was most enlightening and beneficial. In addition I have taken Jeff’s challenge to do “something great within 72 hours”. After finishing the book I started 3 challenges and I am much happier …More are planned.

Again, thanks for the impact YOU have made on my life..Because of you I kept in touch with you and your parents over the years….and now through Jeff you continue to have a positive affect on my life.. Not many teachers can say that about a 5th grade student they had in class over 50 years ago.

Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year.”

i’m not selling books, i’m offering hope that you can love yourself the way you deserve.

The paradox of midlife conviction

Steve Prefontaine
Steve Prefontaine would have turned 65 yesterday. He tragically died in a single car accident in 1975.

The paradox of (midlife) conviction.

Much of Mid Life Celebration’s original vision has come true, yet much remains.

Why?

Because the world is asking for my Disney expertise.

i am quietly and consistently working to give the world what it wants.

i believe that a vision works best when evolution is in the DNA; change is not only welcomed, it is necessary.

N-e-c-e-s-s-a-r-y.

Just finished reading today’s Seth Godin’s post and he’s promoting Persuadable, a new book hypothesizing that great leaders change their minds.

Not a Disney Fast Pass, but a fast pass still the same

Disney University floor
Looks like a compass. Two days ago in Disney University lobby.

Life gets confusing, fast, when you lose sight of who you want to be.

True north isn’t just a catch phrase.

Is it?

Clutter keeps (attitude) change from happening

Pennsylvania Fall foliage
Beauty in a Pennsylvania front yard. Treasure?

This may not be true be true for you, but it was for me.

Clutter keeps (attitude) change from happening.

Clutter buries our most important, and perhaps urgent, priorities. Like a treasure that’s buried, we cannot find our priorities.

Even with a map, finding treasure is not guaranteed.

We may never discover our priorities.

Pity.

Pity to live a life without the optimism that flows when our treasure is found.

Are our priorities, which produce optimism, buried under our feet?

And we thought it was elusive.

PS. In the absence of clear priorities, we turn to the things that medicate, entertain, and distract us. This, ironically, buries our soul right next to our priorities.
