Always is a big word, so is Magic

Disney Customer Service Magic Speakers
Yesterday morning on a run, working, always working. And having fun.

Always working.

Always having fun.

Disneyland wasn’t open yet, but that didn’t stop me from stopping by for a fun photo during the morning run.

Awaiting this potential Vancouver client’s yay or nay on a Disney Customer Service speech in five weeks.

PS. A week earlier, i sent a similar photo from the East coast park.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Pick us, pick us, pick us

The obvious choice. Photo: Yesterday afternoon.

Our world is full of competition. Marketing and Public relations were invented to help people and organizations differentiate themselves from their competitors.

Then the Internet came along and now we have a new Ocean of entrepreneurs who want to quit the rat race and work for themselves on their own terms.

Challenge is, this has created a new flood of “pick us because we’re really different and better than the other choices you have” competition.

Until the time when Mid Life Celebration has a Marketing and PR leader, i will need to occasionally sound like this, even though it is painful.

Strange Magic

Disney University lobby
Yesterday while running, having fun with potential clients.

Strange Magic…

Not the song by Electric Light Orchestra from 1975.

A strange magic has flooded my thoughts with questions.

Questions about fear, opportunity, luck, obligation, and vision.

A few lucky breaks (strange, and magical) combined with a new year of setting (my) corporate direction have collided unexpectedly.

i’ve become busier – sooner than expected – and am overwhelmed with joy, yet faced with a new set of challenges.

Questions like:

  • How much is the content, and how it’s presented, worth?
  • Where is the value and price line that you will not go below?
  • How do i communicate and justify the value?

No one walks into an Apple Store believing they can negotiate the price of an iPhone or MacBook.

No. One.

Why?

Because Apple has set the expectation. Clearly. Most Apple customers understand Apple’s Magic and pay the premium. Those that don’t get it, move on.

This is where i’m at right now.

The only thing holding you back

Walt Disney World Cast Member signage
i expect a little Magic everytime i run. Photo: Yesterday’s run.

Dear everyone (including me),

The only thing holding you back is the long list of bull crap lies you keep telling yourself.

Remaining consistently, and constantly, positive is impossible with negative self-talk.

And while you go searching for some “secret” to compensate for this self-defeating addiction, the secret is in this harsh reality:

You are in charge of your life.

Your recipe for success will include ingredients from others, but it will never be someone else’s recipe.

The scariest part (at least it was for me) is accepting that we have to fail our way to taking charge of our life.

The proliferation of self-help gurus leads desperate people (i was one of them) down a lifetime path searching for an easy plug and play solution.

Bonus insight: You must become resilient to the fact that much of what you do will fail, yet each failure carries you ever closer to taking charge. But only if your attitude positively expects this to happen.

PS. The subconscious reason we want to use someone else’s recipe (and not our own) is so that we can blame the failure on the recipe and avoid blaming ourselves.

Disney Management Keynote Speaker

Disney Management Keynote Speaker
This was the final name tag i wore at Disney.

Preparing for tomorrow’s two-day leadership training session.

It is my fifth and final contract of 2015.

While i won’t be wearing the name tag (above) any longer, i am planing to create a similar one.

Why?

Because not wearing a name tag with my first name on it feels inappropriate. It feels like i’m not “Show ready”. Like i’m not wearing my super power ring.
