While our summer solstice is still three weeks away, I’d like to begin writing with a “summer spirit” today, June 1. Remember summers as kids? Fairly carefree. Innocent, at least until adolescence. No school. No homework. Sleeping in. Often boring. Nothing to do.

I anticipate June being very challenging. Full of opportunities to feel overwhelmed – the guilt from serious, hard work can be potentially depressing. Because it is, after all, the advent of “summer vacation”.
What if we saw June as an opportunity to break the traditional rules and love our hard work so differently that by the time July rolls around, we can’t believe how much we learned and how much fun we had.

Summer arrives early in central Florida. And summer passes quickly, the older we get. Most of us have amazingly fond memories of some carefree times during the few warm months school was out. For me it had to be spending time at Lincoln Way pool on Sunday’s after church.
A few neighbor families would pile into a couple cars and in five minutes, we’d be carrying our snacks and towels to our picnic table in the shade. Playing, swimming, friends, sun, and not a care in the world, save the long line at the high dive.
