You know the saying, “What a day”?

Yesterday. What a day. So amazing. Here’s the story in pictures…

Many Glacier Hotel
Breakfast required a 45-minute drive. Decent view.

Many Glacier Hotel
Howard reminded me of a Disney Cast Member…assertively friendly.

Many Glacier Hotel
Brand new staircase…back to the way it was when originally built in 1914.

Many Glacier Hotel
The fireplace is unique and awesome.

Many Glacier Hotel
The 8:30am shuttle departing. Ours launched at 9:00am.

Many Glacier Hotel
We will take the same route.

Many Glacier Hotel
We had a few extra minutes to walk around before boarding.

Many Glacier Hotel
All 49 tickets were sold for this cruise.

Many Glacier Hotel from Swiftcurrent Lake.

Many Glacier Hotel
A “we were here” photo.

Many Glacier Hotel
Second boat shuttle on Lake Josephine. A 400-meter walk between lakes.

Many Glacier Hotel
Disembarking at the North end (up ahead) of Lake Josephine. Then the climb to Grinnell Glacier begins.

Surprised Howard with the boat shuttles which cut four miles off our foot travel.

Almost walked into a Big Horn Ram.

Saw two pieces of Glacier break off into the lake. The craCk sounded like thunder.

Saw a big Grizzly (through binoculars) and watched two groups of hikers come within feet of a bear encounter.

It was cool to see how uninterested the giant bear was in the humans.

Saw a Moose and her calf.

Literally a perfect day.

No spectacular first impression

Glacier National Park sign
Two college buddies. One has been visiting since 1973, the other for the first time.

Lake McDonald view blocked by fire smoke
The spectacular first impression didn’t happen yesterday. The view behind us blocked by smoke.

Oh my gosh, where do i start on this August 31st morning?

The coolness of having the same arriving flight into Glacier International Airport.

Neither one having to wait for the other to arrive.

The anxiety of how the wildfire(s) smoke will impact the trip, visually and physically – Lake McDonald Lodge closed for the season (a month early) the day we are on our way.

The spectacular first impression at the shore of Lake McDonald was a zero on a 10-scale.

The main reason i stopped climbing the Disney ladder

Lee Cockerell Disney window
Lee was near the very top.

Walt Disney window at Magic Kingdom
The highest rung on the ladder.

Top Disney Service Speakers
One window on the ground floor is for every Cast Member who ever was, is now, or will be. Coincidently, i’m on a plane right now heading to Glacier National Park.

The main reason i stopped climbing the ladder at Disney Institute was the observation that the rungs above my role didn’t produce joyful, healthy people.

Crazy, huh?

Keep the extra money and “better” title.

Joy can’t be bought.

But it sure is fun to have it every day.

Especially when it comes with the territory.

All or nothing

Personal triumph
Not quite to the two mile mark, he’s (left) trailing a teammate (upper right) by roughly 200 meters.

The all-or-nothing scenario faces most of us every day. And often, all day.

It can be challenging (ok, more like impossible) to deliver at a high level all the time.

At Disney, however, we believe this culture of excellence can (and must) be architected with intentional structure and processes – to facilitate exactly that – high performance, all day, every day.

Was inspired by a 10th grader smashing his season (and lifetime) best 5k personal record by 3-minutes and 20-seconds.

Unless you’re the boy or his parents (and maybe his coaches) the obvious question is, “So what?”

So what does this mean to any of us and our continuous challenge to raise, at every level in our organization, every employee’s willingness to accept and deliver at an exceptional level all day, every day?

Hey jeff, don’t forget your clock is tickin’

Going to the sun road
Going-To-The-Sun Road

Going to the sun road
Perhaps it is.

Going to the sun road
Wow.

Mindlessly going from one day to the next, thinking that sometime in the future we’ll become serious about getting our priorities straight, once and for all.

How’s that working out so far?

Live like you mean it means something to you or it doesn’t.

Which is it?

Truth is, we all flow in and out of sunny (smooth) days and cloudy (turbulent) days.

Life’s “weather” should never dictate our joy, gratitude, resolve, or attitude.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.
