Nearly everything is situational

Yesterday, December 11, it was 85 degrees.

Nearly everything is situational.

Many in the central and northeastern United States were enjoying sixty-plus degree temperatures.

i just smiled as i checked our pool water temperature. It was 79. The water. The air was so warm, we closed the windows and ran the AC.

The weirdness of Christmas shopping in December without a coat and gloves is not weird in Orlando. We do it every year.

As antagonistic as this sounds, i say it with love. If you don’t like the cold weather, perhaps doing something about it would help you get over it. It did for me.

PS. i’m not a fan of the Summer heat, but i’ve learned to embrace and cherish all the wonderful things that come with (insanely hot) sub-tropical summers.

Pausing in a busy world

Florida Hospital Winter Garden construction
On the way to teach yesterday, i paused for just a moment as i drove by, to take this photo.

Pausing in a busy world. Who’s got time?

Slowing down.

Maybe even coming to a complete halt.

To chew our food.

To watch the clouds, almost motionless, actually drift slowly across the sky right before our very eyes.

Or maybe we pause to do something radical, like contemplate the impact of our work. And in so doing, we humbly astonish ourselves at the significant impact we are making.

The world does not care what i want

The Blog Whisperer
Who cares? No one.

The world does not care what i want.

Yet, the world is fair. To everyone.

The world doesn’t care what you want either.

Best wishes in 2016.

Obviously, we’ll need much more than a wish.

Go.

If not this year, when?

If not ever, why?

Rethinking looks good on paper

Wild Deer at Walt Disney World
Oh dear, you mean we are in charge of our destiny?

Rethinking public education in 2015 makes sense to Baby Boomers.

Rethinking mid-life, right now, is a much tougher sell to Boomers.

In either case, it is done to change the trajectory.

The 2nd best time to rethink was yesterday.

The best time is today.

Do something that scares you, or something you “absolutely don’t have time for”, like take a walk outside.

Ask, “Am I satisfied?”

A summary of how and why Finland is rethinking education is here.

(Summary: By 2020, Finland plans to phase out teaching individual subjects such as math, chemistry and physics, and instead teach students by ‘topics’ or broad phenomena, so that there’s no more question about “what’s the point of learning this?”)

Attitude scales

Attitude scales. Attitude is what we think and do without thinking.

Habits. Deep, unalterable habits.

Positive thoughts or negative thoughts.

Our mind habitually leans to one side or the other.

This is the most important revelation to mid lifers because it proves that attitude is a habit.

Habits, like smoking, can be incredibly strong and hard to break.

Habits, like not swearing, can be incredibly strong and easy to break.

rethink • reprioritize • recommit
