What’s the point of having priorities?

High school Track practice
Yesterday, a sprint to the finish line. As a team. A clear goal. Give it your all.

What’s the point of having priorities?

Dear executive, if you wanted everyone to be focused on the key drivers for your organization’s success, how would you accomplish it?

How would your direct reports accomplish it?

How would their direct reports accomplish it?

How will your front line do it?

Why haven’t you been doing those things?

Why aren’t you doing those things now?

You do realize what this sounds like and looks like to an unbiased observer, right?

Days like these come and go so often it’s hard to notice

Space Mountain
Part of yesterday’s 33k ride. My ride is on the left.

Happy Veteran’s Day 2016.

Days like these come and go so often it’s hard to notice.

i mean, we just had Halloween, then election day, Thanksgiving is almost here and then Winter Solstice, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve.

That’s the challenge isn’t it?

Noticing the important stuff when it seems everything is important.

Or maybe the challenge is deciding of the important stuff, which is most important.

Not convincing ourselves of our priorities affects our attitude at an imperceptible level.

This imperceptible level, unfortunately, poisons our attitude so slowly, we never notice.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Vibrancy comes down to one of two lifelong habits

Windermere Runners Club 2016
Between Middle & High School, roughly 700 students. About 20 show up for Summer running.

Vibrancy comes down to one of two lifelong habits:

  1. Prioritizing our schedule.
  2. Scheduling our priorities.

This is true in our personal life as well as professionally.

The first habit happens by default, the second, by design.

Think about it.

Our life is the product of our priorities

Hard Rock Cafe Louisville sign
Love all, serve all.

Our life is the product of our priorities.

The thing we forget is that our priorities need to also be prioritized.

It’s not uncommon to have all the right priorities, but have the order skewed.

Sooner or later ambitious people (like me) learn the hard way that work isn’t the most important thing.

So we rethink things, reprioritize our priorities, and move forward recommitted to our enlightened vision.

How much time do we have?

Disney Cruise Line Flag
The photo and today’s blog topic seem mismatched. Kinda like the way we begin our day – thinking about death or thinking about life. Check the deaths or check the births?

How much time do we have?

A 93-year old just placed the newspaper back on the pile and i asked, “So what’s new since yesterday?”

She said, “I just skimmed it, I only read the deaths.”

Wow.

What a profound moment.

Begs the question, “Why was that the priority?”

For me, is it finally carving out time to write those (seven) Disney books i said i would write?
