It’s starting (again) and it’s so predictable (again)

Disney Institute motivational speakers
Leaving Washington State in 1984, we moved to Orlando to carve out a life at Disney.

It’s starting (again) and it’s so predictable (again).

What can we do differently this year, assuming the odds are we have never been able to make the change we’ve set out to accomplish?

Nothing.

Pathetic isn’t it?

Years, decades even, of pathetic self-talk.

That’s when i received the gift.

And you can too.

The gift of feeling like a hypocrite – and i mean deeply, painfully feeling it. So painful i couldn’t stand it anymore. Only to fail again. Until one year…

The only antidote is to get so emotionally pissed off that you rise above your past and slay your demonic, self-defeating internal dialogue.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since. This website is about our mental attitude.

The perfect employee starts with someone who has this

How to draw Mickey Mouse
The perfect employee is an artist. Artists do things better or differently then others who offer the same thing.

(Note, remember, we are talking about perfect. Perfect is a tall order.)

The perfect employee starts with someone who has this…

The criteria for the perfect employee would begin with an amazingly positive attitude. Not in a delusional way, but in a way that doesn’t accept obstacles or challenges as permanent. They see everything as an opportunity or a challenge, and never as a “problem”.

The perfect employee would also be a model of physical wellness. Someone who regularly exercises, eats well, rests well, and is a wellspring of energy and enthusiasm.

The perfect employee would have an unbreakable spiritual belief. What they choose is irrelevant. But whatever it is, it is the epicenter of their emotional wellbeing. They radiate good, decent, and noble thoughts and actions. They live to serve others.

The perfect employee is an inspirational leader who has mastered the technical, managerial, and behavioral aspects of their domain. They balance employee, customer, and business as if the three were only one. Not only are they an expert, they are also a game changer, a category of one.

The perfect employee is exceptionally organized, focused, and disciplined. They are intentional with all they do. Their home is a haven for peace, order, and purpose. They have space in their schedule to plan for, and handle, life’s unexpected challenges.

Facebook mind

Traffic backup at Epcot toll plaza
Yesterday on our way to lunch at Epcot. It was a block-out (no go) day for getting family in.

Vehicle window messages
We can already see the writing on the wall – their Facebook updates…

Facebook mind, aka Facebook attitude.

You either control Facebook or Facebook controls you, at least for me.

Our attitude about our ability to be in control, or to be controlled, by social media is our responsibility. Challenge is, social norms allow overuse to be acceptable.

Even though i was ineffective at keeping up with everyone, i still tried – as if some miracle would happen. Or as if in my trying, i wouldn’t have to feel guilty for missing important moments in people’s lives.

Update: Today Feb 23…wow, reading this now, 100 days after the fact, i must have really been struggling…rather than edit today’s five posts, i’m leaving them as is – a moment in time, an internal struggle captured “on paper”.

The chain of excellence i used at Disney for 30 years

Birds on a wire
Yesterday morning on my street.

Today’s five posts represent a Chain of Excellence that i used – for 30 years at Walt Disney World – to be an effective leader. Leadership drives the employee experience and the employees judge their leader’s trustworthiness on what they see their leaders do, not what they hear their leaders say.

Action vs Intent

Design vs Default

Inch vs Mile

Definitely vs Likely

In vs Out

Maybe tomorrow i’ll dive deeper. Depends on what happens today.

Clutter keeps (attitude) change from happening

Pennsylvania Fall foliage
Beauty in a Pennsylvania front yard. Treasure?

This may not be true be true for you, but it was for me.

Clutter keeps (attitude) change from happening.

Clutter buries our most important, and perhaps urgent, priorities. Like a treasure that’s buried, we cannot find our priorities.

Even with a map, finding treasure is not guaranteed.

We may never discover our priorities.

Pity.

Pity to live a life without the optimism that flows when our treasure is found.

Are our priorities, which produce optimism, buried under our feet?

And we thought it was elusive.

PS. In the absence of clear priorities, we turn to the things that medicate, entertain, and distract us. This, ironically, buries our soul right next to our priorities.
