Happy New Year’s Eve

When patterns are broken, new worlds emerge.  – Tuli Kupferberg

On New Year’s Eve, 2001, i committed (again) to eliminating alcohol from my daily pattern.

Two previous “serious” attempts failed: When Cheryl got pregnant, and when our son was born. Both of those milestones seemed like legitimate starting points for a new life.

But the promise was eventually broken.

Something dramatic was needed. And rather than make the worn out “i’ll start my new change on New Year’s Day, i began my resolution on the biggest drinking day of the entire year.

Impossible is only so until it’s not.

Better late than never is not always about change

Moose lodge sign
Last week in Valparaiso, IN. No one cares about this photo and that’s the coolest part of posting it.

Better late than never. A phrase we have heard since we were children. Why? Because it’s true.

It’s better to make difficult, positive changes to correct poor habits than it is to not change. Sounds backwards but it’s true…

Better late than never is not always about change.

Sometimes it’s about becoming aware of something that wasn’t fully understood – something that once understood, gives us courage and strength in a way we never saw coming.

Writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different websites) has happened every single day since April 1, 2009.

i don’t write for:

  • SEO
  • Followers
  • Fame
  • Sales

i write because it transforms me.

The transformation is facilitated by the illumination from a daily habit that is public and transparent – also known as accountability.

Without accountability we are sunk. And by accountability, i’m not talking about some bull crap theory-looks-good-on-paper accountability.

Accountability that is so easy to recognize, it’s impossible to hide.

Regret sucks

College track
Regardless of the fences, i was determined to find a way onto the track.

Lane 8 on college track
Lane 8 is my metaphor for life.

Regret sucks.

So don’t have any.

Then you’ll be good to go.

Ha, if it were only that easy.

Now enter entrepreneurial spirit.

The coolest and scariest thing at the same time?

There are no rules for how work gets done.

Had always wondered what it would be like to be my own boss.

Not anymore.

Regret: 0

Me: 1

PS. Lane 8’s metaphor for life is this: Lane 8 is the worst lane – the slowest runner is assigned lane 8. But the worst lane could be amazing, even if you came in last. Last in the finals of the Olympics. Think about it, you either see it as “last” or 8th best in the entire world. Perspective is everything.
