What happens when we least expect it versus expecting it yesterday?

Unmet expectations cause all sorts of challenges. Some of them motivating enough to change everything. Some of our unmet expectations help us realize we can never change certain things  – but we can rethink our expectations and let that thing go.

This is called freedom.

Peace.

Sixth months after publishing Mid Life Celebration on Thanksgiving Day 2013, a modest royalty check arrived a few days ago.

Had wondered (for a long time) when it would arrive, but wasn’t expecting anything.

Especially wasn’t expecting the magnitude of the reality while depositing the first royalty check.

Dreams coming true are often very different when they actually happen.

Have you had some unmet expectation bless or curse you this year?

What if they are full of it and what if they are not?

Quote about acceptance

The interesting thing about getting honest feedback is that we should always consider the source.

What if they are full of it? What if they are not?

This makes it tough because often the source itself is reliable, but the source’s exposure and comprehension may be influenced only by second-hand or pre-filtered information.

As a parent or a boss, we often get little exposure to what is actually happening in the day to day. So we rely on others to give us feedback.

The inherent challenge with this perception of reality is our optimism, values, filter, problems, goals, health, and so on, is not based on eye-witness observations.

What if we wished there were more of them in our life?

Crazy, nut-job misfits… wish there were more of them in our life?

The 2014 Winter Olympic video below is worth an encore. Only two minutes.

We get so busy on the treadmill of life. We poison our souls so slowly we never notice.

(it’s almost sickening to watch dreams waste away)

So here’s the question worth asking.

Are we satisfied with our trajectory?

Whatever it is that we dreamt about, does it still give us a tinge of excitement?

Or have we kissed it goodbye forever?

Either way, those really important younger people in our lives are watching us (non-Olympians that we are).

And we are telling them in advance how ‘The Herd’s’ story ends.

It always ends the same way…. “No, I had always wanted to, and really wished I had done _______. But I didn’t.”

But those crazy, lunatic misfits – the freaks who bucked tradition… they’re the ones we wished we had followed.

Take it from one who knows. There’s still hope for us.

A year from now we’ll wish we had started today.

This is stuff that cannot be made up.

It’s simply the cold hard, amazing truth.

Be well and remain amazed.

Pretty sure you know how to access the video…
