Autopilot strengthens mental habits and rituals

family dysfunction
Yesterday, this took my breath away for a moment.

You can’t solve your culture problem tomorrow when you are on autopilot; repeating what you did yesterday.

Talking about personal culture right now, as CEO of You, Inc.

Your attitude in particular, here at Mid Life Celebration, the “Mind” blog.

Indirectly, i’m thinking about a couple executives i coach – they are actually the CEO of their respective companies. They all want their organizational culture to be significantly more vibrant than it is now.

But.

Autopilot.

Gets.

In.

The.

Way.

The worst thing about thinking this way

excuses, habits, rituals
Wellness excuses, habits, rituals. This immediately triggered a business application.

The challenge with permitting your existing culture today is that it makes you more likely to permit it tomorrow.

The challenge with not taking action today is that it makes you less likely to take action tomorrow.

The challenge with not doing what you can do today, is that it also makes you less likely to not do what you can tomorrow.

Will your life reflect your past or your future?

Grinnell Glacier Overlook is empty at 7:15am except for the photographer (me) and this guy (my college buddy Howard). Taken Summer 2017. Howard says he wants to come back this Summer.

Will your life reflect your past or your future?

Do you invest in things that you think won’t change yet always do?

Like what?

Things like your health, finances, world economic conditions, a steady job, and on and on.

You either run your habits or they run you

Walt Disney death announcement
Smoking is so addictive. Addiction is a habit that is hard to change. Is being disorganized an addiction? i have no idea. i do think, however, that we can be addicted to things that make being organized impossible.

Being able to do something well with relative ease is great when you do it.

If you know how to do something but struggle, for whatever reason, to do it consistently without being reminded, then you have an opportunity to develop more effective and efficient personal structure and processes for getting those things done.

Habits and rituals.

Personal responsibility.

Initiative.

Whether it’s the daily doing of your work, doing home chores, staying well physically and spiritually, or simply managing your home environment, the results you reap stem from the structure and processes you implement.

Back to, you guessed it, habits and rituals.

Reacting when reminded, or, initiating action without having to be reminded.

Both approaches are the result of habits and rituals.

Our acts can be no wiser than our thoughts

Sanibel moon set
Moon set behind us. Who looks back when the sunrise is so stunning? Almost no one.

Context.

Even more context.

Our acts can be no wiser than our thoughts.

Think about that.

Make controlling your thoughts a habit and you make controlling your actions a habit.

Profound.

The ball is always in our court.

More action, doing better things, more often.
