Can you text me one thing each morning?

jeff noel quote
This came to me two days ago. Wisdom is action (and sometimes intentional inaction). Common sense without action is not common sense.

Can you text me one thing each morning in addition to your blood pressure readings?

One thing you are grateful for as you take your blood pressure.

Do you know why i ask?

Because i know you can do it.

And because i believe it will help you.

The fact that someone is asking you to do this for yourself is something to be grateful for.

And the fact i am alive is a bonus gratitude item. Not all children live longer than their parents.

i am grateful because i know you know all this to be true. i am also grateful that you are alive. Not every parent gets a chance to have a 7th decade of life.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

The second most contagious thing in the world

Disney leadership keynote speaker
Make no small plans, for they have no power to stir your soul.

The most contagious thing in the world is enthusiasm.

Know what the second most contagious thing in the world is?

The lack of enthusiasm.

Cooper RIP

Sanibel sunset
None of knew this would be Cooper’s last sunset; however, we were all together for his last sunset at our favorite spot.

Unless you’re emotionally attached to a sad event, it’s challenging to care about it. This post is asking for your empathy or your prayer. This post is asking that you think the same way about your own misfortunes.

When something ‘bad’ happens, particularly when it blindsides us, we are left in shock, and deeply hurting.

The antidote, at least from my 57 year perspective, is to cling to gratefulness as if our very life depends on it.

Find the reasons to be grateful, even as you cry uncontrollably.

There is literally no exception to “it could be worse”. It can always be worse. And often, it can always be much worse.

We all have shocking moments in life. July 14, 2014 was one of them.

The upside is that we were all together at our favorite place. It could have played out so much differently. i’m grateful that it didn’t.

Playing it safe is risky

Roger Broggie Disney train
Most risks are out of necessity – we often forget this business reality – competition is fierce.

Taking risks is risky, so is playing it safe.

Here’s the analogy…

A person wants to significantly improve their health.

They visit several local gyms and personal trainer choices and make a decision on which will help them loose weight the fastest.

Their flawed goal is weight loss.

Wait, what?

Exactly.

Decades ago, i thought weight loss was the goal.

Now i’m convinced it’s not.

Permanent weight loss (like all wellness topics) is the result of deeper issues, the first of which is time management and prioritization. The absence of these left me lacking self-confidence and relying on excuses to feel better about my chronic personal neglect.

Until those issues are addressed and overcome, the weight will come back soon enough because the root causes, the foundational thinking and doing, were never modified to support a lifetime of healthy living.

You see, the path to weight loss isn’t in focusing on it.

The path to weight loss is simple:

  • Cardio-based regular exercise
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Adequate rest
  • Clear, concise, compelling wellness goal

Once this baseline is in place, add:

  • Strength training (anaerobic-based)
  • Flexibility
  • Core

Seven fundamentals.

That will bring about and sustain a healthy body weight.

A healthy body weight facilitates dramatically improved health metrics like BMI, blood pressure, resting heart rate, cholesterol, triglycerides, range of motion, increased strength – all of which dramatically impact our mental, spiritual, work and home life.
