Nearly everything is situational

Homeowner swimming pool app
Yesterday, December 11, it was 85 degrees.

Nearly everything is situational.

Many in the central and northeastern United States were enjoying sixty-plus degree temperatures.

i just smiled as i checked our pool water temperature. It was 79. The water. The air was so warm, we closed the windows and ran the AC.

The weirdness of Christmas shopping in December without a coat and gloves is not weird in Orlando. We do it every year.

As antagonistic as this sounds, i say it with love. If you don’t like the cold weather, perhaps doing something about it would help you get over it. It did for me.

PS. i’m not a fan of the Summer heat, but i’ve learned to embrace and cherish all the wonderful things that come with (insanely hot) sub-tropical summers.

Attitude app

iPhone home screen screen shot
What if there was an app that measured, managed, and enhanced our attitude?

Yesterday at the end of a seven-mile run, a neighbor and i spent some time catching up. His son, 18, had left just minutes before to drive by himself to Philadelphia. My neighbor is a Spanish-speaking Pastor. i could sense his parental distress from the reality of his son leaving the nest.

Another neighbor, retired, drove up and through the passenger side window, asked me if i had heard of the WAZE app. It tells you where speed traps are set up and where there are red-light enforcement cameras, etc.

i was so astonished that people would even need such an app. If you drive the speed limit (and why wouldn’t you) and respect traffic light rules of engagement, then the app is worthless.

You can also say to Siri, “Check traffic” and you have an instant, up to date report, in seconds.

Caught myself sounding a bit self-righteous and reminded my neighbor to please keep sharing his discoveries, even though i have no use for WAZE.

Pausing in a busy world

Florida Hospital Winter Garden construction
On the way to teach yesterday, i paused for just a moment as i drove by, to take this photo.

Pausing in a busy world. Who’s got time?

Slowing down.

Maybe even coming to a complete halt.

To chew our food.

To watch the clouds, almost motionless, actually drift slowly across the sky right before our very eyes.

Or maybe we pause to do something radical, like contemplate the impact of our work. And in so doing, we humbly astonish ourselves at the significant impact we are making.

Why Dead Poets Society?

Dead Poets Society dvd photo
Received this yesterday in the mail from a former teammate at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. He’s currently an Epcot Custodial Area Leader.

Why Dead Poets Society?

Because when we worked together in the mid-1990’s, i worked hard to be an inspiring leader – to set an example for daily excellence.

Every single day, all day.

Twenty-years later, he’s still feeling it.

And in his kind, completely unexpected gesture, he reminded me that no good deed is ever wasted.

There is always the chance that what we offer can be overwhelming to the recipient.

There is always the chance what we offer isn’t nearly enough.
