Why is simplicity so compellingly attractive?

Placing postage stamps upside down
The tradition (now a habit) of placing postage stamps upside down started in 1996. It was a way to say “i love you” to my dying Grandmother.

Why is it so challenging to simplify our life?

Simplify.

Simplicity.

Simple.

Doesn’t the very goal word personify simplicity.

How can simplifying be complex, difficult?

Why do so many people, and so many organizations, and so many countries struggle with this?

Why is simplicity so compellingly attractive?

Why is it so difficult?

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

This website is about our mental attitude. To easily and safely leave this site to read today’s post on jeff’s physical health website, click here.

How’s our positive mental attitude regarding our physical well being?

magic Kingdom entrance on busy morning
Each day is just another day in paradise, right?

The key to thriving is to never tire from the daily grind. Wishing the 20-something fellow gym regular a happy new year yesterday i asked, “What’s your 2016 resolution?”

He said, unhesitatingly, “To maintain where I’m at.”

i congratulated him on understanding that maintaining our health for a lifetime is the real goal.

Who cares if you run your first 5k or your first marathon, if your drive and determination evaporate after achieving that short-term (yet lofty and noble) goal?

Can’t help but wonder, today, the sixth day of the new year, how many will succumb to the self-fulfilling prophecy of short-term, feel-good, accomplishment. The prophecy being that once the initial, lofty and noble goal is accomplished, we fail to accept that we are actually only at the starting line of the real (even more lofty and more noble) goal.

The one thing our motivation craves

What is it about having a compelling goal that excites us so?

Legalize marijuana in Florida, not just for medicinal purposes, but for recreational use?

When a goal is outrageous, impossible, or both, it stirs people’s souls – whether they are for or against.

How does this apply to our life being “stirred”?

Why the original goal of a million dollars is not appropriate

LOVE sign
Happy Valentine’s Day 2014

Most authors make no money from book sales. When you factor time, and expense, it’s pretty much a losing proposition by itself. The exception is when a book goes viral (like getting on Oprah).

The opportunity to generate revenue is from speaking (and perhaps products related to the book’s cause – think “Life is good” brand).

Writing a book adds decent credibility. It’s gutsy – because if it wasn’t, more of us would do it.

Driving a 24-year old car, and keeping expenses low, and determined to raise money until a cure is found.

The original goal was to raise one million dollars, but decided not to limit the amount. Nor stop trying until the cure is here.

Once that’s done, we can move on to the next thing that needs serious help.

A friend’s spouse has had 33 surgeries from Crohn’s disease, and the last one was to remove the only remaining portion of his digestive system.

Our son has Crohn’s and is exponentially more likely to get colon cancer than a person without Crohn’s. Last anyone checked, colon cancer is bad news.

Make no small plans.

The lesser goal may be comfort, or avoidance

good quote about goals and priorities
The lesser goal may be comfort, or avoidance

If we caught a glimpse of who we really are today and compare that with who we thought we’d be by now, how would that play out?

rethink • reprioritize • recommit

Those three come in handy when we get to our destination in life and realize we were misled.
