Why Dead Poets Society?

Received this yesterday in the mail from a former teammate at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. He’s currently an Epcot Custodial Area Leader.

Why Dead Poets Society?

Because when we worked together in the mid-1990’s, i worked hard to be an inspiring leader – to set an example for daily excellence.

Every single day, all day.

Twenty-years later, he’s still feeling it.

And in his kind, completely unexpected gesture, he reminded me that no good deed is ever wasted.

Insignificant dates

Disney University Cast Member trophy display
Yesterday morning, a water break at Disney University on the way to Magic Kingdom. The Pinocchio statue is awarded to Cast Members with 30 years of service.

Insignificant dates.

Living like we mean it.

Things that we don’t have time to worry about until it’s too late.

June 8, 2019 is insignificant.

Yet it’s the day i turn 60.

Back on January 1, 2009 when i officially incorporated a small, solo, entrepreneurial LLC business, i gave myself 10 years to do everything in life i wanted to do. It felt good to be six moths ahead of the “official” starting line (June 8, 2009) when i turned 50.

The first half of the vision is over – “spend five more years at Disney to reach the official retirement age (55) – and the 30 years of Disney service milestone – and then five more years to put a dent in the universe.”

There are just over 3.5 years left to do everything in life i hope to do.

Welcome to 2016, STOP

Weird Stop sign
Last night at the library, a book cover.

Sometimes, the things we do blow our minds. What was once something so ridiculously impossible, it never crossed our minds, is now something that is simply a daily habit.

It might also become something worth sharing.

And it might be something that some will take the wrong way.

Here’s the share.

Funny how blogging under your own terms means you can discover things few, if any, have discovered. So it’s quite exciting to be a pioneer an explorer. For instance, my blogging style has evolved since 2009 and while it happened ever so gradually, i’m now writing 100 days ahead.

No one on the Internet writes five daily, differently-themed blogs. And few have written a single blog for as many consecutive days (2,400+).

This means that what i’m writing right now (September 23, the 2015 Autumnal Equinox), is due to post on New Year’s Day 2016.

How cool is that?

The moral of the story?

  • It’s okay to make your own rules.
  • Be true to yourself (which means you need to go through serious growing pains first – there is no short cut).
  • Get started asap.

A year from now, you’ll wish you had begun today.

The burden of a creative mind

Disney Star Wars toy
Two days ago at a friend’s house.

The burden of a creative mind is that while creativity is an asset, people with an abundance of creativity have a challenging time making sense out of others who’s unfocused and undisciplined efforts and attitudes seem blatantly inappropriate.

Same thing happens with creative companies, like Disney.

To people and companies that live in this creative space, anyone else who doesn’t focus and discipline themselves to the obvious, well, they seem like hypocrites.

The obvious, by the way, is to over-focus on the same things others under-focus on or ignore.

Wisdom Book video Trailer

This Andrew Zuckerman video shares powerful, and diverse, perspectives on wisdom from many famous people. Ironically, it’s the same stuff non-famous people would say.

What follows at the next four posts today is a series of one sentence questions for each themed blog. Four different questions that famous and non-famous people should answer similarly.
