i’m fascinated by the mental results of setting a 10-year deadline

Disney Leadership advice
A note to myself from June 2013, as i listened to George Kalogridis’s leadership Keynote Speech. Trusting your gut was one of seven points he made that have served him well.

i’m fascinated by the mental results of setting a 10-year deadline.

Not because George Kalogridis, Walt Disney World President said it, but because i believe in it.

Trust your gut.

My gut told me in December 2008, six months before my 50th birthday, to make a 10-year plan to include everything that i wanted to do in life before i die.

The crazy part was saying to myself, “Since no one knows when they will die, what would happen if you set an artificial, yet realistic, deadline in which to do everything you want before time is up?”

Here’s the thing, i have never in my life heard of such an endeavor.

So it’s likely, no one i know has heard of anyone either.

So if i make this claim that i’m doing it, how crazy (ridiculous) would that be?

i did it anyway.

Trust your gut.

This takes some serious thinking.

As of today, i have 21 months to finish up.

That’s the main reason i’m flying to Glacier National Park tomorrow for four days – to see GNP dusted in snow. It may be the last chance i get.

Our life forms itself to fit into the thoughts we choose

quote
Took this photo yesterday, having no idea what i was going to write today. To think like this photo suggests can be a habit. Or not. One thing we can bank on, life is unpredictable.

The way you think manifests itself in your behaviors.

Your behaviors create your habits because you repeat these behaviors over and over.

You do it.

i do it.

Why?

Because our thinking also has habit-forming power.

And changing who you are – if that’s what you think you need – has to start with changing what you think.

That’s why this blog, about our mind, is one of life’s five big choices.

Everything begins and ends with our thoughts.

May you find what you need today, all day, to start leaving whatever thoughts don’t serve you – to begin letting them go – as uncomfortable as that feels right now.

If you can’t explain it simply…

simplicity
Hugh McLeod from GapingVoid Art is my favorite cartoonist.

Simplicity
The point is made with the cartoon. Hugh’s daily email features a piece of art (first photo) and then a business insight (second photo). No need to read the fine print after Einstein’s quote.

We’re born. We live a life. We die.

Simple.

Except for the living part.

Live like you mean.

The only thing that complicates the living is how long we get to do it.

Pick one of the three attitudes you think will serve you best

Cincinnati buildings
Our attitude is one of two possibilities: positive or negative.

We either have a positive attitude all the time, a negative attitude all the time, or a mixture.

Which one of the three would you opt for if you had the choice?

Ok…

What’s your choice?

Are you convinced the one you picked is the attitude that will serve you best?

It would make sense to pick the best choice, right?

i’d really like to see GNP dusted with snow before i die

Going to the Sun Road
Yesterday on Facebook.

How do we overcome the noise (real and imaginary) from others when our way of thinking and doing goes against conventional and traditional thinking and doing?

Since returning from Glacier with Howard two weeks ago, i’ve been crafting a return trip before October 1, when Logan Pass Visitor Center closes for 2017.

Two other factors creating a sense of urgency include Going to the Sun Road closing Eastbound from Apgar on October 9 for construction. Plus a heavier than normal travel schedule through October leaves few options.

Using Capitalone points, i’ll travel September 27-30.

Booked hotel and rental car days after returning, knowing they can be canceled without a fee.

It feels good to commit.

i had waffled almost constantly because airfare kept going up.

It also felt a little selfish.

The tipping point came when i honored the commitment to live like i have until my 60th birthday.

i’d really like to see GNP dusted with snow before i die.
