i listened for something elusive

quote about struggle
From someone’s Facebook update a few months ago.

i listened for silence.

But heard none.

After several decades, i listened again.

And heard it.

That began an ongoing midlife celebration.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Who doesn’t like crazy?

Clarity often comes after an extended wait. It was about six years before .think .differently came to me as a brand differentiator.

The beautiful truth about being an entrepreneur and interfacing with other entrepreneurs is that there’s no perfect, one way to do things.

There are thousands of recipes for success, tips, tricks, hacks, etc. Much of it is free.

At the end of the day you must ask and answer one simple question:

What do you want to be that is different from the rest?

Be the best in your category?

Become the category?

If you wish to be different you must remember that this will frustrate people who expect some semblance of normalcy.

My friend couldn’t find my blog at my speaker site.

Here’s my reply to her email where she asked, “Do you have a blog?”

The posts often contain useful business info, but i am not writing for an audience. i thought that was the point (gain followers) before i began writing, but i eventually came to realize that i was the one who needed changing and improvement, not others. It’s analogous to posting gym workouts. No one really cares what you do. But you must do the work because it’s critical and because it makes you healthier.

i intentionally do not promote my blogs.

Crazy, i know.

i like crazy.

i think it’s rare, and valuable.

PS. Lower case i’s are intentional. A reminder in humility. i am small. A servant. It’s easy to forget. And once we forget, it’s hard to regain.

The paradox of midlife conviction

Steve Prefontaine
Steve Prefontaine would have turned 65 yesterday. He tragically died in a single car accident in 1975.

The paradox of (midlife) conviction.

Much of Mid Life Celebration’s original vision has come true, yet much remains.

Why?

Because the world is asking for my Disney expertise.

i am quietly and consistently working to give the world what it wants.

i believe that a vision works best when evolution is in the DNA; change is not only welcomed, it is necessary.

Just finished reading today’s Seth Godin’s post and he’s promoting Persuadable, a new book hypothesizing that great leaders change their minds.

The fascination with fascination

Orlando based inspirational speakers
Waiting at LAX with our Son. He is the reason i began writing.

The fascination with fascination. Just over seven years ago, i began thinking about what would my life be like if i lived like i were dying?

To challenge the status quo – because it’s just a habit i cannot break – rather than think in terms of “only six months to live”, i landed on the idea of “what if you had 10 years left?”

Come June 8, there will be exactly three years left of that decade-long opportunity.

All i can think about is this:

What if i hadn’t begun this commitment? Where would the past seven years have taken me?

Only four days from beginning the eighth year

iPhone calculator screen shot
Come April 1, 2016, this is how many blog posts i’ve written in seven years.

Ever do something that was impossible at first, miraculously accomplish it, but then it grew into something even more impossible?

Only four days until the beginning of the eighth year.

Seven years (2,557 days, including two leap years) of writing five daily, differently-themed blog posts equals 12,785 posts.

There are also 100 days worth of (500) posts that are written and in the que to publish. Yes, i suffer from writer’s flood. Some days, writing only five posts isn’t enough.

So in reality, i’ve written 13,285 posts.

Sick.

Impossible.

No end in sight.
