Overcoming the critics is not a theory

Muhlenberg College
A metaphorically lonely photo and a door that appears to be crying out, “Notice me”.

Are you quietly dreaming of 2016 being a breakout year?

Are you fully aware that no one cares what you want?

Overcoming “no one cares” is like time travel into the future…arriving at a dreamy state only to discover it is better than the dream.

Here’s what i mean…

No one cares that i’ve written five daily, differently-themed blog posts for 2,469 consecutive days. And no one cares it started as an impossible goal to do it for 100 days only, in preparation for writing a book. And no one cares that i left a wonderfully comfortable 30-year career at Disney to put a dent in the Universe.

Go, even if frightened, even if no one cares.

You care.

Right?

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Life is one long “delay of game”.

Sometime around puberty, our ability to dream wide open starts to become censored.

We start defaulting to, “Tomorrow”.

As i like to remind myself, “Today is yesterday’s tomorrow.

Stop comparing (please)

Apple iPhone shipping box
Yesterday…opening an Apple shipment from China.

Stop comparing (please).

And stop trying to fit into the mold of what others tell you is the recipe for success.

i used to be a copy-cat wanna be.

Is that what i’m chasing?

What if i chased becoming a category of one?

Or is that only for other people?

The plight of the stubborn visionary

Steve Jobs unveiling the iPhone
Steve Jobs was a zealot and a narcissist. Does the world forgive him for those qualities?

The plight of the stubborn visionary.

There are few others with the (supportive) karma to encourage you to stay the course past the point where you have made significant progress.

This is a huge threshold to cross, but it’s still not enough to prove you are right.

So…

This is the point where the name callers – zealot, crazy, misfit, fool, narcissist, idiot – start looking and sounding like the Sirens call from Greek mythology.

The name callers want you to fall prey to their predictions.

At this point, more than any other in your journey, you cannot back down – even as the psychological pain begins to suffocate you.

Inspiration addiction

Disney Leadership Speaker jeff noel
Demand of yourself one thing – original thoughts (and original action). Photo: yesterday at Epcot’s Le Cellier

Our biggest challenge is our addiction to new ideas. Like buying a lottery ticket, briefly, there is hope. We hope that learning a new idea will solve our problem.

The next amazing quote.

The next best selling business book.

The next class.

An MBA.

One question. How has that worked out so far?

Photo: During a client dinner at Epcot yesterday, we were discussing how culture is an organization’s most prized possession – and how most company’s fail at thriving. And they fail because culture is invisible from the inside, but blatantly obvious to the customer. And in that moment, an original thought captured first on a paper napkin, then photographed as a backup.
