The guaranteed antidote to regrets

Blurry photo
Life goes by in a blur.

Is procrastination to blame for my regrets?

Is it to blame for yours?

Yes and yes.

Consider this guaranteed antidote – a deadline.

If we want to have a better future (healthier, wealthier, smarter, more content, etc) we create wonderful dreams in our minds about how we’re going to change.

But we fail to attach a deadline, thus enabling procrastination to never feel compelled to end.

The reason we avoid deadlines is two-fold:

  1. We think we have forever
  2. A deadline is too much pressure for something we don’t need right now

Long-term procrastination makes us a spectator in our own life.

The frustration is severe because it wasn’t that we never finished our dream, it’s that we never got started in the first place.

Deep regret.

Tragedy is never far away

Tragic auto accident
While at yesterday’s card tournament, a Dominos pizza delivery employee made an appeal for donations.

Out of nowhere, we can be blind-sided by a harsh reality. A week ago, on his first shift as a Dominos pizza delivery driver, a young father was hit by a woman, driving on a revoked license, going 100 mph while fleeing police. He died instantly.

Yesterday after lunch, walking back to our car. The walk, and the time and conversation together, was not urgent.

The urgency of daily living feels like a good reason to abandon the important thing we postpone for later.

We become more aware of the reality of our time on Earth and the limitations placed on us by our life’s choices, and the evaporating options remaining.

Looking back, we can’t remember what that urgent thing was. All we have to show for it now is the the habit we didn’t change.

Overcome as quickly and mercilessly as possible

Apple Calendar on Apple Watch
Yesterday and today on Apple Watch.

The daily grind never goes away. When we stay on top of it we tend to forget how far we’ve come, how much we’ve conquered, in life. But let a few days, or even a few weeks, of slowly getting behind with our day-to-day and bam, we can feel out of control again.

When our organizational habits force us to live in an out of control world, we adapt and loose our ability to see how draining and stressful this lifestyle is.

Overcoming this, you realize that living the old way was so unhealthy.

Falling back into the old way is an amazingly clear reminder that you have accomplished something magnificent.

And any digression should be overcome as quickly and mercilessly as possible.

Note: The premise is two-fold, bad things are always going to happen and being decently on top of things allows us to tackle them as they come. It’s when we are backed up (as a lifetime habit) in handling bad things that the snowball effect overwhelmes us.

Is our clock ticking on deaf ears?

We miss things intentionally or unintentionally. Big difference.

What we dreamt of doing with our life when we were younger and what we actually do now should come closer together as we age.
