Fear sucks

Apple iPhone 6s
No one is immune from fear. The game changers overcame fear.

Fear is a one-way, all expenses paid trip to an unfulfilled life.

How do i know?

How do any of us know.

We just know. It’s called life.

Fear permeates our being until one day, if we’re lucky (or until we stand up in protest) we demand a refund and buy a new ticket.

A ticket to rethink, reprioritize, and recommit.

If not now, when.

If not ever, why?

Your midlife triangle

Busy intersection near Walt Disney World

It’s a chronic situation.

At least it was for me.

When will we get our proverbial sh!t together?

Probably never.

Unless we embrace this deceptively simple framework.

Your midlife triangle is made up of three sides.

  1. rethink
  2. reprioritize
  3. recommit

It’s that simple and it’s that’s difficult.

As we rode bikes to school yesterday we crossed three major intersections near Walt Disney World. It was morning rush hour.

Told our son that most drivers are so distracted because they’re in a such a hurry that it’s the equivalent to being drunk.

The past two days have each netted me almost getting hit by a harried driver when we have had the right of way to cross the cross walk.

If we’re lucky, a wakeup call will bring us to our knees

Teddy bear in starting blocks
Finland 2009.

Teddy Bear at Track meet starting line
This Teddy Bear has been traveling for a decade. Ski jumping is big in Finland.

The things my child needs to know, it’s my responsibility to teach it to him. But i get busy with a career and putting out life’s fires.

i was lucky, a wakeup call brought me to my knees.

Sounds cliche, but finally i started listening to my heart.

Disney (30 years worth) taught me the profound power in intentionality. About over managing things others under manage or ignore.

Life taught me the profound power of regret. And that regret breeds prolifically from excuses.

The marriage of those two – excuses and regret – produced my first book. It was written for a little boy (who turned 15 yesterday) in case something bad ever happened to his dad.

If i could give free copies to anyone wanting it, i would.

Not interested (anymore) in making money from this book. In fact, the proceeds are so small, it’s not worth the effort to compete for people’s precious attention.

But for reasons that readers share with me, i want as many people as possible to have a copy.

The watering hole for our discomfort

Randy's Donuts
Randy’s friends probably thought he was crazy.

Nothing special, remarkable, or stunning happens within our comfort zone.

And we know this.

There is one exception.

The exception is when we make our comfort zone a matter of (always) looking forward to being uncomfortable.

This is where growth, confidence, discovery, joy, and freedom gather for camaraderie.

Mid Life Celebration is full of these

Chimney Rock
Chimney Rock yesterday.

Exclamation Point at Chimney Rock is not where i thought this post would be written.

Surprise, surprise.

Mid Life Celebration is like that isn’t it? Full of good things we don’t see coming.

The caveat is this:

We see what we want to see.

We control our attitude about whether our day is filled with beauty or whether it is filled with struggle.

PS. We all struggle. So why not struggle in beauty?
