The burden of a creative mind

Two days ago at a friend’s house.

The burden of a creative mind is that while creativity is an asset, people with an abundance of creativity have a challenging time making sense out of others who’s unfocused and undisciplined efforts and attitudes seem blatantly inappropriate.

Same thing happens with creative companies, like Disney.

To people and companies that live in this creative space, anyone else who doesn’t focus and discipline themselves to the obvious, well, they seem like hypocrites.

The obvious, by the way, is to over-focus on the same things others under-focus on or ignore.

Upsides have downsides and vice versa

Apple Notes writing app
Created documents in Apple’s Notes app so i could write in Glacier Park.

There’s an inherent risk in trying anything new.

There’s also opportunity for a breakthrough as well.

What’s our risk tolerance, if we were brutally honest?

The upside to being able to write without an internet connection is the fact that you can do it from anywhere using just an iPhone.

The downside is the price you pay when you return to civilization and all the catching up required to go from analog to cyberspace.

It’s taken three days to adjust from doing things differently last week in Montana.

Taxing?

Yes.

To the point of wondering if it was/is worth it.

But traveling without a laptop last week was a huge first. Not to mention no cellular signal except at Glacier’s eastern entrance – nowhere in the 1,000,000 acre park, and no ATT in West Glacier.

Digital withdrawal?

Kinda.

With an upcoming trip to France (leaving in 20 days), the Glacier experiment has boosted my confidence.

One of life’s most overlooked opportunities suffocates us

Disney Casting Center unique Disney door knobs
One good turn deserves another.

Midlifers at Disney's Casting Center
Creating Magic? Finally meeting after six years.

Why do we let what we can’t do stop us from what we can do?

How do you thank someone for their overwhelmingly remarkable demonstration of community?

One of life’s most overlooked opportunities suffocates us. And it happens so slowly, we don’t even notice.

We fear failing or embarrassment, so we wait and do nothing. This poisons our soul.

What if we simply did what we could, even if it felt small?

Because haven’t we been taught since childhood that it’s the little things that count?

Yesterday was unexpected proof.

Happy New Year 2012!

Last night at ESPN's Wild World Of Sports Complex

Happy New Year!

Huh? Wait. Sure, it was 90 days ago. And no, this isn’t an April Fool’s Day prank. It’s a blogging, and life, experiment.

So how has 2012 been treating you? Have the first 90 days of this amazing opportunity been better than, about what, or less than, you expected?

I sincerely hope your answer is, “better than expected”.

This post goes a bit against my short and pithy mantra, as well as going against what some would say is conventional blogging wisdom.

You see, we must always find creative ways to get and stay motivated.

And to that end, I wonder every day how to do it. And also, how you do it.

So here’s a little secret. This post is 90 days old. And yes, it’s New Year’s Day morning. For real.

This month’s posts are a look at the future – 90 days out – and looking back to compare the two perspectives. Every post this month will be written exactly three months in advance.

This could be an epic failure, or a really interesting way to discover the undiscovered.

Happy New Year (and happy April Fool’s day too).

Roll With Mid Life?

Yes, we should “roll with it”, mid life, that is.  There is no avoiding it.  Is there?  Maybe if our lives are cut short, we could avoid mid life, but that’s really the only way.  Who wants that?

Not me.  So what can a person do?  Why not “roll with it“.  A phrase I learned a long time ago.  It means to take whatever you are given and “roll with it“, or make the most of it.

If you can’t change what you are given or presented with, why not make something good from it?  Because if we don’t, then we are destined, it would seem, to complain.  Who wants that? Here, let me demonstrate how simple this concept is. Please pay attention, it’s over in ten seconds.
