May the writing never sound like advice

Disney keynote speakers
Yesterday, Easter Sunday, while volunteering to deliver “Food For Families”.

i never want my writing to sound like advice. It is intended to allow the reader to ask themselves whatever questions they’d like.

Note to self:

When talking and writing, remember to preface your messages with, “You don’t need to believe me on anything. If it intrigues you, try it out for yourself.”

i’m not recommending anyone do anything i’ve done.

All i’m saying is that i used to get certain results in my home life and work life and now those results are exponentially better.

Dear Future me

Teen running red dirt road
No regrets. Being active as a 57-year old allowed me to be his running partner at the start.

Dear Future me,

Don’t think you have forever to do all the things in life you want to do.

You will be wise to eliminate these three reactionary excuse starters:

  • i shoulda
  • i coulda
  • i woulda

Looking back and regretting something that you should have done, could have done, or would have done – ugh, now that is a terrible ending to your life’s story.

Find a million ways to figure this out.

Dear younger me

(This video is worth a 2nd look, it was posted 1st at Lane 8 yesterday)

Dear younger me,

When your midlife crisis finally hits, don’t panic, it’ll be one of the best things that’s ever happened to you. From it, you’ll do three transformational things, in this order:

rethink •  reprioritize  •  recommit

This will inspire you to write your first (of many books) book, create a 10-year plan (to be completed between your 50th and 60th birthdays), and start your own business which will require you to leave Disney after 30 years of service.

PS. You’ll discover that waiting two years to write the book and taking two more years to muster the guts to publish it will eventually be something you smile about.

The best way to succeed

Glacier National Park
Know what inspires you and build it into your life.

The best way to succeed in this world is to act on the advice you give to others.
– Unknown

Responsibility is the price for freedom.

  • Don’t quit your day job
  • Being better, different, or both is the only way
  • It’s easier to be different than it is to be better
  • Find and exploit your unique selling proposition
  • Publish your first book
  • Become a category of one
  • Charge a premium for your art

This is tip of the iceberg advice.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

It’s not about the money, even when the money is great

Refundable airfare rules
Our life is not eligible for a refund.

Sunset at Epcot with Monorail
Our days come to an end one at a time.

A great friend shared this yesterday:

“My 21-year old cousin had just been in a motorcycle accident and died twice on the table, but he miraculously made it. Then i get the invitation from you…everyone was happy at your retirement party. A few days later at my company’s (near Disney World, Time Share, obsessively money and numbers driven culture) quarterly breakfast celebration, no one was happy. That’s when it hit me that it’s not about the money.”

A blinding flash of the obvious only becomes obvious well into our life, usually decades into it.

The temptation is to rationalize that it’s too late to transform.

At 13 years his senior, was honored that he thought i could offer sound perspective and wisdom.
